SC Engine Rebuild Shops

As a relatively new Porsche owner, I have heard a number of positives and negatives about Porsche engine shops, specifically one in Los Angeles and one in Seattle that advertize in Excellence and Panorama (I was not sure whether I should mention their names).

Has anyone had experience with one of these shops, or can anyone recommend a shop for a very high quality rebuild of a 3.0? I will be having minor performance upgrades (SSI, Web Cams and higher compression) but essentially want to keep the engine relatively stock. The shops in my area (Minnesota) are quoting $15-20K for an engine with 98K, excellent leakdown and compression that does not smoke or leak oil. (I had been involved with vintage Corvettes for years - so I am not a complete stranger to engine shops and very high quality rebuilds/performance upgrades). - Also, for what its' worth, I am really enjoying my 1982 SC - great cars - and great people!

Thank You

If interested I use a small independent shop here in Santa Barbara. They do excellent work. My 79 3.0 did the stud thing and they did the 964 cam upgrade and a top end. The labor was within the original estimate and I supplied all the parts.

Email me offline and we can discuss further. mtz1@home.com

I also know of a 3.0 engine that has the 3.2 Andial upgrade with 46 IDA webers and dual plugs. It all ready and is ready to go....he wants like $8900.00. It needs an ignition system to complete it.

I understand that he would take another 3.0 in as trade.

The 15-20K can buy you quite an engine. Way too much for one with 90K on it, especially if it is stock. You could pick up a used stock 3.0 for about 3-5K. As far as the two shops you mentioned, go to the search function of the BB and enter each of their names. A list wil come up with all prior discussions. There have been many. Remember, these two shops have been in business a long time and probably would not be in business if they screwed up often. So read with a grain of salt. I've never used their services, and don't personally know anyone who has. Personally, I would either do the rebuilt myself (sending certain parts out for machining); by a complete, used motor; or use one of these two shops. But then again I am within 30 minutes of the So. Cal. shop. Good luck and welcome to real drving world.

I would not rebuild a 98K motor with excellent leakdown if that's what you have. $15K is WAY too much for a used motor. I met Paul Weir and liked him.

For $15K you could have a butt-kicking motor built. Many, many options if you don't care about 'stock.'
