Alternator strap

Hi,

If Ibut a stock alternator strap, do I need to remove the distributor to put the new strap in. It is a 77 911 3.0.

Thanks,

David

As far as I know, yes. Certainly it would be the easiest way to do it, and removing/replacing/retiming the distributor is no big deal.

I'll just pay the extra $ when the time comes. I do not have the foggiest idea or tools to check the timing. A bit risky if I screw up.

Oh, read your "Gold Plated" book. Great read, thanks for the enjoyment.

David, there's also a strap--not sure who supplies it, but it's out there--that doesn't require removal of the distributor. It's a two-piece thing, and that obviates the need for removal.

Delighted you enjoyed the book! Thanks.

Checking the timing, by the way, is surprisingly easy. the only tools you need are a combination wrench the size of the bolt that holds the distributor in place--10mm, as I remember--and a good timing light. I'm guessing timing lights these days cost about $50.

If it's something you'd have any interest in doing, just for the fun of DIY, I'll be happy to walk you through it.

Stephan,

The misses got me "Gold Plated' for Christmas this year. Couldn't put it down...finished it in 2 days. Great book, thank you. I recommend it to all Pelicanites out there.

"The Gold-Plated Porsche" by Stephan Wilkinson brought to you by the good people at "The Lyons Press"

Do you still have the S? By the end of the book it looked like it would be hellascious on the track.

Oh, yeah. It's a work in progress. Currently out in the barn getting lots of Lexan "glass." Already has a fiberglass front and rear end. If I had any idea how to post a photo, I would...

I removed my stock strap and installed one from rennline without disturbing my distributor. Photo below.

Are you serious about posting a photo, Stephen? Only asking because you've been here for quite some time.... almost 2400 posts worth.

Adding a photo is easier here than any forum I've been to. Simply leave the cursor where you want the photo to begin and select "click here to upload a photo". It's highlighted about one inch below this box when typing. It brings up a box for you to select any photo in any directory and it will resize to a point. I believe the photo must start below 2mb or so.

Well, lemme try...nope, I see absoutely nothing anywhere that says anything about uploading a photo. I may post new threads, replies, attachments and edit, that's it. I can also get an exhaust ringtone, etc. etc.

You need to click on: "Post Reply" and you'll see under the options:
"Attach a photo".
Follow the instructions after "Click here to upload a photo".

Steve, it always catches me too, you can't post photos with the quick reply box at the bottom of the screen, the only way it showsup is to use the post reply button at the top right of the thread...then it at the bottom of the message posting box....
