Question 1979 911 what is this, do I need it see pic

What is this? my 79 911 SC. Had the decklid off and the brackets so that I can make the passenger side bracket. These straps just seem to rap around the stock brackets on both sides but thats it. are they some sort of safety strap to keep the decklid from flying off? seriously what are they and do I need them?"

Grounding strap for the deck lid, I believe. Should be bolted to deck lid through bracket bolt and then also to the sheet metal in the car or the rear bracket mount.

you dont need it. your hinges [provided no composite washers] ground it out for you.

The VDE is/was the German equivalent to our FCC, but more stringent regarding vehicle emissions of EMI [electro-magnetic interference] and RFI [radio frequency interference ... consequently, when CDI was fitted to the 911s the guys in Stuttgart went overboard to insure that the fast-rise 46kV lightning bolts running around didn't escape to some distant govt. minister's Mercedes' radio. Could have been worse ... they could have fitted shielded aircraft spark plugs and connectors!

As long as your radio/stereo work without any annoying static directly related to engine rpms without the 8 ga equivalent ground strap in place ... I think you could do without it, but don't toss it in the dumpster, yet. If ignition noise in the radio shows up ... you already know what the fix is ...

I just did some deck lid work and had these off on my car. They are grounding straps but I can't tell you what they're for. My straps (88 coupe) were attached as seen in the photo and ran under the deck lid hinge as the photo shows. They bolted to the hinge bolt itself. Holes in my strap were different size and the smaller hole goes on the lid hinge bracket bolt while the larger hole goes on the hinge bolt.

Be sure and weigh it so you keep a running list of all the things you take off the car
