Pic of my customized passenger side decklid bracket
just thought I'd post a pic. this was made from a fence steel bracket from home depot. used spacer so that it connected to the strut proper. fairly light, but seems very strong.
the real PIA was the bracket against the firewall. This would be an awesome aftermarket part set to buy. but have not found any good ones yet. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171937784.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171937811.jpg |
Not sure why this is necessary? Can you explain?
|
Dan, I'm with you. Why all the fuss.
|
I bet so he can use 2 shocks , 1 on either side???
|
Installing a big ol' whaletail, huh? Screws will work loose ... it needs to be welded! Bracket to the firewall, too!
|
Here is what I did.
Not so pretty but functional. Locktight has kept the bolts in the firewall tight so far, welding would be permanent. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171947513.jpg |
To answer the above posts. the one shock on the driver side is not sufficient to hold up the weight of a tailed decklid. I then joined two shocks to the driver side and after a bit of time noticed it pushing the decklid out of alighnment a bit. I sold the heavier tail and replaced with a fiberglass one, but thought I'd go ahead and mount on the passengers side the other shock mount. I used cotter pins/bolts ad lock washers on the bracket with plastic spacers. The both end of the shock tho are held with cotter pins. At tghe ends of a few bolts I also shoved a real tight fitting Rubber grommet to help keep them from falling off.

OK, that looks pretty good! you mus have a vice! I am lackingthe table vice so my cut was not pretty. :)

I also wanted to install a tail, so I fabricated a right side bracket with steel from Orchard Supply, then pop riveted it in temporarily to make sure that both right and left sides work square to the body without binding, then Mig welding the bracket to the fire wall. The whole thing is rock solid, unlike the setup with just the strut on the left side.
I also found that the strut works better on the right side (outside) of the hinge so that you can take the cover off of the airbox lid. I did all of this before installing a new decklid and new Carrera tail with emergency light, rear wiper, and AC condenser. I must be crazy, lol. Hinge http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1172209580.jpg Installed (before I moved the strut to the outside) temporarily http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1172209714.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1172210307.jpg |
I have yet to see how straight mine lines up. It should be pretty good. I HOPE it is! Pics are coming of the completed progress of all my fiberglas parts installed by Monday! All i need to do now is put the rubber seal between the new 3.8 tail and the decklid, install the new emblem, and add the pipng to the rickers. oh yeah and install a cople supporting brackets to the rockers and the rear bumper.
