Loose steering shaft.... this can't be good!

This how much the steering shaft moves on my '66 912!!! I seem to recall some aftermarket plastic sleeve that slipped down the shaft to fix this problem. Am I dreaming or is a complete tear-down and new bearing installation in my future? Is there even a bearing available for that early of 901 series car?

Darryl,

The shaft is loose without the steering wheel. Fitting the steeringwheel, with the spring and cupped washer tightens things up. Especially the washer is important, I drove mine for a while without one, and that gave some slop.

There is supposed to be a bearing down there. I don't think you don't need to tear the complete steering assembly down, if I remember correctly (I did mine a few years ago), you don't need to take it down much further then you already have. Check out this article .

Hey Darryl...been there, done that when I replaced the stock steering wheel with a MOMO on my '68 912...check the bottom of the wheel that you just removed...you'll find the sleeve there...

AH HA! It helps to have the correct steering wheel on the car!

I had taken the "trophy" wooden 901.xxx.xxx.xx numbered steering wheel off and popped a stripped-down 914.xxx.xxx.xx numbered one on it before leaving the car at the bodyshop for the frame straightening work. The spring is still on the correct 901 steering wheel but there isn't one on the 914 steering wheel!

Chalk it up to another thing learned the hard way!

stock wheel, spring and cup washer will fix that. the sleeve repair does not relate to early cars.
