Differences b/w 911 T, E, L, S

OK I know that the 'S' models are the most desirable, but what's next? Is it the 'T' models? I've heard some are considered less desirable, but can't remember which...

Also, what do the letters stand for?

L: Luxus
T: Touring
E: Einspritzung (injection)
S: Super

S is the most desirable, but the E is faster to 100mph

Depends on the definition of "desirable". For me, the T was the most desirable, because I wanted to modify my car without feeling guilty or killing the value. The S is just too expensive to mess with, IMHO. However, for less than the cost of an S, I will have a faster and better handling car.

I thought the S stands for "sport"?
I also thought the E translates in english to basically "economy"?

...I am sure I am wrong.

E = Einspritzung (fuel injected)

T was the base model
E was mid range
S was top of the line

65-66 standard 911 only
67 standard 911 & 911S
68 911L and 911S
69 911T-E-S
same as '69 up to '73.

Depends on years but for '69-73..
-alloy brakes on S, option for others
-Konis struts on S, option for others...this is really just to have the right bolt spacing for the alloy brakes although my 70E had hydraulic self-leveling struts and alloy S brakes so go figure
-S engine has bigger ports, more compression, forged pistons and different cams.
-S sometimes had better wheels (6x15) vs. others (5.5x14, steelies) Fuchs
-Varying trims, deco trim outside and interior, 911S has 'wide' trim and normal, 'skinny' trim. In general most T's have skinny trim, most E's have wide trim.
-S had an oil cooler in the right front fender
-The S and E had mechanical fuel injection (MFI) from '69-73 while the T only got injection in 1972.

The T had about 6-7,000 cars/year, the S had about 2500 (give or take, I'm going off '72), and the E about 2,000. In reality, 911E's should be the most valuable, because they are the rarest!

The T is a great little car for driving around. The E is probably the best all-around street car, IMHO. The S is basically a race car that still has a few creature comforts.

The L was a '68-only. It is basically the same as the '67 normal 911, ie. non -S.

Perhaps I shouldn't be modifying a 911E but then again, I don't really care what other people think I should do with my car. At least I ain't cuttin' metal. Everything can be put back stock (& #-matching) should someone desire to do so....after I croak!!!

In 1968 only the 911L and 911 models were imported into the USA, the 911S was Europa only..Of course the 912 was in the USA too.

68 was the first year for smog devices, which made keeping the 911 in tune a bear...thats why Porsche went to MFI in 69.

Only the 72/73 Es were quicker to 100 mph than the Ss. The E cars are not as desirable 69-71, mostly because of that funky suspension. Give me the 911S anyday...its the only way to fly.

Katie, when you say most desirable, are you asking about:
investment/resale value (S, L)

best model to modify (T)

best bang for buck in initial purchase (E)

best daily driver without worrying about resale value (T)

most overall fun to drive in stock form (E)

etc.

and then you've got the coupé/targa debate.

The Long Hood cars are past being daily drivers...and they are past being chopped up, except in the rarest of occasions.

Only the 67 Soft window Targa is worth the trouble.

Koni Sports, 944 Turbo brakes and a 3.0L MFI should handily dispel that notion.
