Camshaft and tower questions

I removed my right cam tower complete with cam and rockers. I didnt remove any of the parts as I was just inspecting them. I turned the cam one complete turn and I proceeeded to reinstall it a day later after inspecting the heads. I completed the reassembly and as I turned my motor by hand, some of the valves are now hitting a piston as they open upon compression.
Questions:
1. Is there a procedure to reinstall the cam tower without doing a cam timing? I tried to reinstall the tower at TDC but with no luck.
2. Should there be a mark on the cam tip as the Haynes manual states? My cam tip simply says 930, and the cam bolt has no markings.
I would greatly appreciate any inputs or tips regarding this matter. Thanks in advance.

Clint

The bottom line is you HAVE to retime the cams. I hope you didn't damage anything. If you didn't disturb the pin location I.E. didn't remove the big nut on the cam. Then it should only be a matter of getting the chain on the right tooth.

It seems you must time the cams. My new cams did not have the punch marks for the initial set up prior to timming, I was told to have the part number in the up posistion and that worked OK. I think if you adjust the rockers all the way out, you may be able to turn things carefully to get things lined up to start. Of course then you would need to adjust the valves on that side prior to timming.

Mack,
Are you referring to the part numbers that are stamped along the body (shaft) of the cam, of the ones that are stamped on the tip?
As it stands right now, all the valves are closed, and when I turn it one way, one intake and one exhaust opens. Is there a good resource besides the factory manual that I can use to do this? I have Bruce Anderson's book, 1st edition, but it doesnt go into much detail on how to time cams. Thanks.
