SWEPCO vs. MOBIL 1
Is the SWEPCO a synthetic? If not, how does it compair with the synthetic gear fluid crowd? I am a firm believer in Mobil 1 oil and wondered if the same reasoning for loving it would hold for Mobil 1 gear fluid...

Swepco is not a synthetic and if you read some past posts on this stuff, Most folks swear by it and would say that nothing compares to it's superior ability to add smoothness to shifts. It is the very best lube for your tranny available! (Change annually, and run some fresh innexpensive lube for 200 miles before adding Swepco 201)
Oh, and do a search on this board for Swepco. ------------------ Zach 77 911S 3.2 |

Swepco ia a petroleum product and not classified as a synthetic. Some believe it was brought into this world for the salvation of the 915.The posts on this BB support that belief, I'm certainly going to put it in the G50. ------------------ |

If your currently running swepco and its time to change your fluid, should you run something else through before putting in the new swepco.

I'm going to make you search for it yourself, but there was a post a few months back where someone had tried a synthtic (not sure if it was Mobil) and also Swepco 201 and had felt that Swepco was far superior in giving smoother shifting.

Synthetic oil is slipperier than dino oil, but that's not always better. the 915 was probably engineered for less slippery oil, judging by its era. Some trannies don't agree with the newer, super-slippery lubes, and I believe the 915 is an example.

I had tried Redline synthetic in my 915
tranny, was not happy and put in Swepco, now very happy! From what I was told, the Swepco is the best for 915's the G-50 is a different kind of tranny so synthetics work better in them.I can't remember the exact wording but If my memory serves me correctly I got this info from Paul Guard of GT transmissions,He's the guy with the full page ads in Excellence magazine and the provider of a large percentage of the racing trannys for Porsches. |

My experience was similar. My shop recommended against using Swepco in my G50, and prefer a Castrol gear lube instead. They use Swepco exclusively on 915's, but advised that it doesn't work as well with G50 synchros.

Changed the oem lube in my '88 Carrera (28,000 miles) to Mobil 1, and the transmission was slightly noisier, though shifting was unchanged. The Mobil one was significantly less viscous than the factory lube which was still clean after 12 years.

I have used both Mobil1 and Swepco in my 915 trans. I've noticed better cold temperature shifting with Mobil 1. BUT... with the type of synchros used in the 915, Swepco is preferred over Mobil1.
With Mobil1, I felt that I could 'rush' the synchros from gear to gear. The Porsche designed synchromesh as used in the 915 is called a 'balkring' type. There needs to be adequate friction within the system for the synchros to operate well. With Mobil1, it seems to be a instance of not enough friction, a by-product of the slicker fluid characteristics that synthetics provide. The later G50 trans has a Borg-Warner cone-type synchro. They probably operate well with synthetics. Change your Swepco OUTSIDE the garage. You will thank me. |
