dwell meter hook up (101 projects pg 73)
1974 911, 2.7, all stock with cap discharge system and points.
. Waynes book 101 projects, pg 73 says do NOT connect the dwell meter across the coil as damage may occur to the CD system and the meter, instead hook the "signal lead" (- lead I guess?), to the point wire on the dist. I thought the neg wire on the coil went to the dist?............I'm confused?? , please describe the best way to hook up my dwell meter, and help me understand why? thanks , marion

Honestly, I haven't hooked up a dwell meter to a car in like 20 years
![]() ...but in the past I always used "distributor side of the coil" and ground. Works on domestic points-era cars. Any reason why that explanation won't work on a Porsche?

The points for a CDI system are just a switch for to tell the CDI Box to fire. Unlike the older, Kettering system, where the points directly sent voltage to the coil.
There is a connector just on the outside of the distributor where the points are connected, this is the location Wayne is refering to.

The dwell meter goes across the points in a CDI system, which means one side to ground and the other side to the trigger lead at the distributor to the CDI and tach.

Marion,
I like to set my dwell initially @ 35. Then, as the rub block and point gap goes down and the dwell increases, it will eventually get to 41, which is the other extreme. Don't forget to oil the distributor wick and grease the rub block and shaft surfaces.
