time for 's' hose replacement?

i'm referring to the line connecting the oil tank to the oil cooler. i have a small but annoying leak coming from the edge of the hose on the tank side. i tightened the clamp on it, but it didn't seem to help. i noticed that this hose is pretty rigid on my car, and am thinking that's why the clamp isn't sealing well. are they supposed to be more supple and pliable? if so, i'll replace.

I believe it should be somewhat supple. I replaced mine as my "S" hose was leaking from the middle. Weird eh?

The rubber part is flexible, but due to its thickness the hose in general is quite stiff.

It's supposed to be the consistency of hard rubber, not hard plastic.

Mine has small cracks developing in it and I plan on replacing it in the next few weeks. It feels hard as a rock.

... just tried changing the angle of the clamp on the leaking side by moving it away from the tank a little, and it helped a good bit. i'm thinking if i replace with a less stiff hose and a new clamp i'll be fine.

I replaced the "S" hose on my '84 911 about two months ago. The old hose was not leaking, but had hardened and had small cracks on the ends and was beginning to buldge in one spot when hot. I did not want to take a chance of that hose failing while on the road.

The replacement hose was approx. $40; I replaced the clamps also, since the original clamps were in pretty rough shape.

Regards, Bruce
