Cabriolet Window Seals?

Does anyone know if you can purchase the vertical window seals by themselves for a Cab? How about once you buy them, how difficult are they to install?

I have an '83 Cab and the passengers side seal is ratty. Evertytime I roll up the window it catches and and gets all bungied up. I have to open the door to roll the window up?

Did mine a couple of years ago. The rail is held on with nuts on the backside of the pillar. If I remember right it's just a remove and replace after that.

I think I've seen them in a Stoddard's catalog. I think installation for the side seals is just a few screws. I'll check my catalog tonight for a part number.

I am interested in this information also. I understand Vertex has them but they are just rubber, not covered in lame cloth like the originals.

We would be interested in the part number and cost too! Ours are looking a bit ratty.

Blaine - what kind of Cobra replica do you own? We have a Factory 5

What happens if you just rip all of the canvas off. My rubber seems good, just the canvas is getting old.

Excellent point. I too thought about this. Is there an adhesive release that would allow to peel of the fabric?

I may try this tonight. I tried to peel it back without a release and the fabric was too brittle.

There may be a chemical available to loosen up old/dried adhesive, but you'll probably end up tearing off the old top in shreds anyway. Unless your top is just literally rags though, I'd suggest that you use a digital camera to take pictures (inside and out) at every stage of the removal process. Even the Porsche factory manuals are not real concise on every detail of the installation procedure, so it's best to have something you can look at later on. Get plenty of glue (3M is what I've used in the past)...be patient....make sure the underlying frame is properly lined up (i.e. nothing bent or broken) before you start laying the canvas. I've had the best luck starting in the middle of the top...find the middle point of the canvas, line it up with the middle point of the frame and then work your way toward the back and then finish up working toward the front and the sides.

Sonic,

Did you remove the seals from the car to rip all of the material off or just rip up to the edge?

Did the fabric leave an impression in the rubber or is it smooth?

I didnt remove the seals....but I plan to when I have time. For now I just tore away the fabric and dyed around it.

Not an elegant solution but it worked for now. The rubber is smooth underneath and fabric doesnt leave a mark.

Hi, when I replaced my cab top fabric and rear section, I also recovered those pillar post seals with some of the same fabric that the top was made from. It was quite a large piece of fabric being it was the cut out for where the rear window was to go, so it was the size of the rear plastic window. Had more than enough to do the job. I took the pillar post seals off of the cab frame, bead blasted them due to some corrosion, then painted them with a satin finish epoxy paint. After that, I preped the seals by removing all of the old fabric, the underlying rubber was in great shape, cleaned off the residue from the old glue, and then applied new adheisive and stretched the frabric to fit perfectly. I used several spring loaded clamps to hold it all in place while the adheisive set. I was very pleased with the results, they looked like new parts, and after adjusting them, they seal without any leaks what so ever. This was a very time consuming job, being I was replacing the entire cab roof fabric, but it all looks like new. I swore to my self that I would NEVER replace another top, due to all of the hand fitting and many, many hours of work involved. I just about drove me nuts because it is a major PITA. I now know why the shops charge so much money to replace them. It has been almost 5 years since I did the job, and it still looks great. There is a lot of hand fitting, cutting, glueing, clamping and adjustments that need to be done to get it correct. I did take many pictures before doing the replacement, so I could have a refference to where all the parts need to go and how they fit. If I had not done the pictures, I really would have been screwed!!! Hope any of this helps. Good luck on the task.

I found Automotion (aka Performance Products) to have good diagrams (atleast in catalog) and parts for my '85 Cab. seals.

www.***************/productpage.aspx?pid=101275&name=Cabriolet+Vertical+To+Rear+Of+Side+Window

If you are talking about vertical seal on trailing edge of window, yikes, Expensive !

As other poster, I plan to re-cover when replacing top but my rubber is good.
