Trigger door handle disassembly
I picked up some pitted chrome door handles to replace the black ones on my '73 911. I had to disassemble the door handles to get them re-chromed. I have enclosed some step by step photos to show the disassembly--it is a simple process but this might help if your thinking about doing it yourself.
Door Handle: (followed proj 75 in Wayne's 101 book for removal) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173403422.jpg Step 1: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173403500.jpg Step 2: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173403621.jpg Step 3: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173403716.jpg |
Step 4: Remove lock cylinder--critical to have key in cylinder to prevent tumblers from falling out!!!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173404190.jpg Cylinder out w/ key http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173404251.jpg Step 5: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173404379.jpg Step 6: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173404440.jpg |
Step 7:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173404696.jpg Finally: Broken down components--there is a pin that holds the trigger assembly together--I didn't dis-assemble it beyond this point but the guys at the chrome shop did. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173405057.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173405210.jpg I'll post some pics once I get the re-chromed handles on the car. Cheers, Adrian |
thx for the valuable info
I've swapped lock cyls from one car to another but never pulled it all apart. Did you find any areas that show particular wear? |
Randy,
I didn't see any wear -- just a lot of gunk blocking up the spring assembly--I just cleaned and oiled the spring mechanism. Adrian |
Mission Complete -- new hardware installed
Before: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1175644420.jpg After: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1175643580.jpg Handles came out great -- just as good as new-- cost about $160 to rechrome both handles. I used Metro Plating in Kensington, MD--just outside the Washginton beltway and would highly recommend them. Their website is www.metroplating.com |
Thanks for the inspiration and confidence doing my door handles with this write up. Just got mine back from the powder coater and they look great!
Here's a few photo's..SmileWavyhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204514651.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204514700.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204514767.jpg |
Joe,
Glad it helped you out -- the door handles look great -- it's amazing what a small change like that can have on the overall appearance of the vehicle. Thanks, Adrian |
At about step 7, if you attach a small clamp as shown, pulling the rod out 1/4" or so to put it under tension, you won't need so many hands when reassembling.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245594381.jpg
