Collector Plates in Colorado

Just FYI for you Colorado guys, I just got collector plates for my '83 SC, even though it's only 24 years old. I always thought the rule was that the car must be at least 25 years old, but I asked the lady at the DMV counter to try it and she did and it worked!!!

Does anyone know if they've changed the rules or something? Ive been googling but can't find much.

I thought the emmissions test change to 83 and newer, you get the full test; 82 and older (my year this year), final test before SSI's. Last year it was 82.

Maybe because your car was built in 1982 (as an 83 model)?

I thought the emissions test was 83 and newer as well, but when the guy pulled my car into the bay at Envirotest he didn't put it on the dyno, just put the sniffer on it and did an idle test and then a 2500 rpm test.

My neighbor had a good guess:

Since the car will be turning 25 years old inside the 5-year registration renewal period, then i'm eligible for collector plates.

Sounds good to me. I'm just glad I don't have to do emissions ever again.

No, I don't think that's it. It might be because it's turning 25 within the next 1-year renewal period (for non-historic vehicles) or maybe they reduced the requirement to 20 years, or maybe it's because your car was built in 1982, as I suggested in an earlier post)...

Well, it's still 25years as the limit - just checked the website. Doesn't say anything about the model year - just vehicle must be 25 years old...

Mine is definitely an 82 and I had to have the full emissions test in 2006. Since you get two years on the test, I'll apply for historic plates in 2008.

I actually borrowed a cat last year to get me past emmissions (mine was shot). I've since bought a used one and almost feel bad about not putting it on yet. The whole bad for the environment to release bad stuff is weighing on my decision. Note, this is my commuter car so I'm putting out bad stuff on a daily basis, not just on a track day.
