Where to connect 3rd brake light wire?

Hi all,

I have an '85 and I am trying to connect the third brake light.

Where can I connect the third brake light wiring? I was trying to connect it in the cab. I was looking at the main harness. This harness is the one on the drivers left side, under the carpet and under the seat.
According to the Haynes manual it is a black wire with a yellow stripe. I found the correctly colored wire at the tail light and at the brake Master Cylinder. Unfortunately I did not find the wire in the harness.

I have also looked at the wiring harness on top of the center tunnel. I think this is seat and heater controls.

Any and all help is appreciated. I would like to find out if any 86 or later owners know where there thrid-brake light is connected.

TIA
Nick

On a '88 Cab I recently purchased there was a separate wire coming from the front of the engine in the main harness that was originally for the 3rd light. It ran in a sub-bundle in the main harness with a violet (under lid light) and a brown (ground). Unfortunately this wire had been damaged by a short and could no longer be used. I fixed the light itself and simply connecting it to the black/yellow and brown underneath the oil filter that goes to the right brake light. When the engine comes out this spring I am going to replace the harness section that has the damaged wire in it. Inside the cab I am not sure which of the harnesses the brake light wire is in, but I can tell you that it would not change color from the engine compartment to the brake switch. Good luck

Well worse comes to worse I will either connect the third brake light at the switch itself, or in the engine compartment. Anyone know of an good and easy way to push some extra wire through to the engine compartment?

I have looked at the center tunnel near the shifting linkage, this all appears to be well sealed and I do not wish to break any of these seals.

TIA
Nick

Nick:
Hopefully, you're not getting the kind that sits inside the back window.... I opted for the external light (the kind most normally reserved for the cabriolet models) that sits on the engine compartment lid.
I think it gives a "weider" look to an already weird looking back end... kind of an unexpected visual effect. Also allows more room to see out the back window. I had to drill 2 holes into the engine lid to mount it. It came black, but I had it spray painted the color of the car (white gold metallic). Is a Porsche item that I bought thru a magazine (is the shorter one)It comes in black, and I could very well have left it black, but opted to have it painted.
I encourage anyone with an earlier model to think about putting a 3rd brake light somewhere in order to add some measure of safety.
I removed the left tail light assembly & wired it into the brake light socket (or the wiring just in the vicinity)
Here's a link to a photo of the job: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1168902&a=10745165
Sorry I didn't have time to take a better picture.

jlex.

Jlex,

Thanks for the info. I originally wanted that light, but everywhere I looked it was over $65.00. I found a light that goes inside the glass for $30.00 (incl shipping). I was told it was out of a '87 911. I got it, and found it was from a 928 (seems quite larger, but I am not sure. It has a 928 part number on it anyways.

I had this for about a month before I got serious to put it on. I got serious becuase I was rear-ended just two weeks ago (Merry Christmas). Now it is on. It fits well on the bottom of the rear glass. This works well for me because I need to look up and out the rear for the big SUVs :-)

After looking at all the wiring harness, pulling out almost ALL of the interior (sans seats) and figuring the light harness is in the tunnel, I pursued other options and found (rememebered) the defrost window wires go directly into the engine compartment. Voila' pulled the wires through hole the defrost wires use and spliced (ouch) into the drivers side brake light wire (Black with purple stripe).

Always havin' some sort of fun!
Thanks to all again.
Nick

Nick: sorry to hear about the rear end collision... when I picked my 911 up, I followed it in my '97 Jeep Wagoneer & decided right then & there it was a rear end collision just waiting to happen & the first thing I did was to get serious about putting in that rear brake light. Couldn't find an interior light that was meant for the bottom of the window, so I decided to splurge on the external model. Lights up like a Christmas tree now.... shouldn't hear any lame excuses about someone not seeing me if I ever get hit. Hope the rest of the readers think long and hard about that little extra bit of protection in the NEW YEAR.
regards,
jlex.
