911 acceleration
why the 911 is the baddest and best sports car ever:
The legendary styling: "smiling" look, almost sinister. The "simplistic" basic interior, just the very essentials to go fast, oil gauge/pressure, temp....and the BIG RED TACH right in your face, almost to say: "hey, pay attention to me". the sounds are also very unique, the whining of the fan, the noise of air getting sucked in through the rear lid as the RPMS rise, giving more power. The acceleration is the best part, hurdling down at 70 behind some "slow poke", knowing that 100 is only a few seconds away, 4th gear, 4500 RPM...clutching the wheel a bit tighter... PORSHCE 911: The ultimate enthusiasts car. When I hear about them being "compared" to Corvettes, I want to throw up. Just keep driving and remeber: There Is No Substitute.... I'm just sad not to see many more on the road during this cold winter..... you wimps ![]() 83 SC, drive safely.... I read the manual, it actually says to observe all applicable traffic laws...hahahah.. |

At 4500 rpm in forth gear I'd be doing 130 mph.

Can someone tell me the normal RPM range that I should keep my 911 while driving on the highway...I usually keep it in 4th gear at 4,000 RPM doing 80 and I feel like I may be decreasing the life of the engine...
I make about 60 miles a day highway driving. More advice would be helpful |

I've got a 83 911 with a 3.3 turbo motor in it. The short 915 gears make it accelerate like crazy. I'm only doing about 90 at 4500rpm in 4th. I've also got a few upgrades, exhuast, intercooler, intake and k27turbo that reduce the lag so the turbo kicks in at 2500rpm and is at full boost around 3500rpm. Stock is normally about 800-1000rpm higher.

Outside parking lots, my driving habits never seem to allow RPMs under 2500. I stay around three grand to 3500, just cruising. I don't use fifth unless I'm going at least 65-70.
I will admit this: Second gear takes me to about 70 mph, FREQUENTLY. As I've said, second is special because it's the tallest gear I can legally scream to the top of, in this nation. So I do. Then merging in traffic becomes a third gear thing and if someone wants to be a jerk, he can listen to my sweet spot in third! Fourth and fifth are scarry because the car just keeps pulling firmly while the scenery blurs. You know what I'm talking about. ------------------ '83 SC |

ahhh... the turbo.
these cars are what convinced me that porsches are by far the best all-around sports cars, period. my father had a pristine '77 euro 930 when i was sixteen. for whatever reason, this car was the quickest 930 i had ever ridden in, even though it 'only' had the 3.0 in it. 2nd gear on that thing was the most wicked warp drive i've ever felt; unreal. several years and several cars later, he bought a mint '79 martini & rossi edition 930 with only 12,000 miles on it. what a sweet ride. i literally cried when he sold that one. i was in college, and i was trying to fanagle some way of buying that car from him when he decided to sell. i begged him to let me make payments on it. of course, he didn't go for it, and i had absolutely no business at that time owning a porsche. i probably would have killed myself in it, anyways... i was a little more careless then. i don't know if my carrera is any more practical a car to own. i do know that my father had to replace the turbo twice in his 2nd 930, though, because he didn't drive it enough. evidently it is bad for them to sit too much. driving my carrera isn't quite the same experience as the 930, but it helps me to remember slightly younger days of taking dad's turbo's to the gas station, on dates, and beyond. sure was a lot of fun!!! ------------------ Adam Nitti ajnitti@mindspring.com www.adamnitti.com '85 911 Carrera Coupe |

I get .8 bar at about 3300. I also have a GHL exhaust, K-27-7200 turbo, and an electronic boost controller though. It's not my daily driver, although I drive it often. It has been very reliable. I don't think you'd have to worry about a turbo much more than your carrera.

Previous to some upgrades I was getting boost around 2800 rpm. The following upgrades are getting me on boost at 2100 at full between 2800 and 3000 (cool climate in Va.) : C2 turbo exhaust with no cat, modified k27 with lighter bearing group and rotors, Powerflow intake. The exhaust was done first and reduced spool about 200-300rpm. The Powerflow next then the turbo. Got the exhaust for $500, turbo for $1800 and some labor totaled up to $3000.
