remove powdercoating?

my fan is powdercoated white, and i'm in need of a change as the white gets too dirty too fast.

what is the best way to remove the powdercoat? media blast? don't want to damage the fan

thanks

Aircraft stripper works well. While pc'ing my fan had problems with out gassing and had to redo the fan. Stripped it twice with stripper then bead blasted and finally got it done to my liking. Also tried sandblasting but would have taken way too many hours to do.

Buy new fan and replace...really. Tried to do it on some suspension parts on my old 944; it was an exercise in futility. You can get a new fan used much easier and just power coat the new one (+ you can sell your old fan)

Regular powder is baked on at 400deg... to remove bake it for 20-30 mins at 700 deg... that will cook the powder off, like stripper.

I'd only do that if money is of no concern... I'd rather spend my $ on something else. I haven't priced a new fan, but I doubt they are cheap

edited: ps: I just did a quick price check... 676.50 for a new fan (or remove the powder coating) ...seems obvious to me.

I sold a used one (powder coated) for a couple hundred some time back...they aren't free and "good ones" are becoming harder to source.

Baking it is probably your best option at removing the powdercoating. Make sure to get it balanced afterwards.

If you are getting it re-powdercoated, don't do anything. Just drop it off at your pcoater. They will remove it by putting it in the oven overnight.

Dan is correct.
Aircraft stripper turns it to a stretchy rubber-like peel-off substance. Fast & easy.

I have sandblasted powder coating off of gasket surfaces before - these were supposed to have been masked at the coater...

It was no big deal. Another option is to soak in something nasty. I bet gun wash would work if you soaked it for long enough.

They make a stripper specifically for powdercoating. Aircraft stripper is "okay" but this stuff is the schiznit.

I did my fan housing twice plus front and rear sway bars with a quart. Once you get the stripper washed off, a pressure washer helped get the pc out of hard to reach places. Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves. Aircraft stripper will eat through nitrile gloves in a very short time
