Steering Wheel recovering project - phase 1

I bought a Dino wheel off a member here that needed to be recovered. I like the wheel. But as you will see from the pics, it has a couple of rough spots. Went by my uhpolsterer today and he quoted me $600... uh, er, yeah....

As I got up off the floor, he said he would sell me the hide for $75. I was thinking about doing this myself, but just wanted to see what he would charge for giggles. Yeah, giggling away.

I am wondering if I could use the leather from another source, like a junk jacket or something. I paid $80 for the wheel and don't want to put a lot more into it. Any ideas...
