Glass

Now I know that I may be all alone in my concern about clean glass. I believe most of you have dirtier glass than you think. As I've said before, a film builds up on my windshield and those T-devices at the gas pump do not remove this film.

FWIW: I found what appears to be the easy solution I was looking for. Paper.

You may all think I'm crazy, and you'd be right. but if you've ever noticed that your windsield is not crystal clear after using one of those T-things, do this: After you get the soap on, take one of those blue 'shop' paper towels, also at gas pumps, and rub the soap firmly into the glass. Voila! This sure beats using chrome polish.

FWIW to you.

Even better is to use old newspaper to dry and polish the wet glass - a trick my grandmother taught me (no, she wasn't a Porsche driver).

The black and white newpaper works best. Don't used the color comic or advertisement secition. Also works great on mirrors.

Its the ink int he newspaper that acts as a fine polish, thus the sparkle. Perhaps the blue paper is so abrasive it pretty much does the same. Trick to really clean glass is to first clean it with plenty of water and soap (make sure to get all of the soap off) and then to "polish" it with Windex (make sure it has amonia in it) and newspaper. Try not to get the Windex on the paint as it could stain it a bit.

Well, I am familiar with the trick of using newspaper and windex on windows and yes, it works well. But I still feel that there is something else going on here. In an earlier thread I asked if anyone had a solution and got the feeling that I am more focused on this problem than just about everybody. One poster said that the hard-to-get-off film is a waxy combination of petroleum gook. I believe this.

What I do know is that a thorough cleaning with cloth and soap, followed by ammonia, and then even alcohol, does not remove this film. I was looking for an alternative to using chrome polish with works, but is a pain in the @$$ to do. the message I have for anyone who might know what I'm talking about is that soap and paper seem to work, if you apply some firmness. MUCH easier and more convenient than chrome polish.

And for anyone still reading: Even after ammonia and alcohol, you can easily see this gook crumble up and come off, when using chrome polish, so I'm not just imagingin this.

And finally, here is the goal: Rain-X is really cool stuff, but it causes wipers to streak. When a clean wiper moves across a truly clean windshield, the glass is crystal clear 1/2" behind the wiper. Instant clean. No streaking, not even for an instant. Rain-X works better than anything except a truly clean windshield.

FWIW

For the really bad windshields, use a glass polish. I have used the "griots garage" stuff and it worked VERY well. Makes old somewhat speckeled glass look like new.
