Castrol (German) Syntec 0W-30 vs. Mobil1 0W-40
Which oil is the better, Castrol 0W-30 (German) or Mobil1 0W-40?
Does anyone have an analysis for the Castrol oil? Thanks. Last edited by movin; 03-10-2007 at 06:09 AM.. |

Similar to my question. I have used Mobil 1 0w40 previously and with no complaint. Got a free fill with Castrol Softec 5w40 that I could not resist. With all the talk about lower additive levels in new oils I started to search for the content in the Castrol oil - no cigar.

For a really deep discussion on oils visit www.bobistheoilguy.com
They are about as nutty on oil as we are about our Porsche's. David

I can't find any info. about additives regarding the Castrol (German) Syntec 0W-30. However, there is a loyal following that touts this brew as superior to all else so I thought I would check it out. Many, from Corvette, BMW, Audi, and VW owners, and the ricers, rave about extremely low wear numbers. I wouldn't use it my '87 Carrera but would in my 4Runner and Corvette if it's as good as some say. Possibly a good choice for the 996 and 997 guys.

Castrol 0w30 is a fine oil, but it does not meet the specs set by Porsche...namely the HTHS is too low...An oil needs a HTHS rating of at least 3.6 to make the grade....It is but one crtiteria but it is an important one.

But the German Castrol 0W-30 bottle does state it's Porsche approved. I'm looking at a bottle right now. Got it at Autozone on sale now. Maybe you guys are thinking about the USA brew. This is the German oil.

Oops, I noticed the bottle that said Porsche approved is the older green formula. The new gold colored formula you get today no longer says Porsche Approved.
