rear tailight replacement problem on 1989 carrera4

I bought a 1989 carrera 4 with 32 original miles. The Right rear tailight lens was cracked. Unlike the 69-89 911 cars, you must replace the entire assembly. Dealer item only at $237.47. I ordered the unit and it arrived in 2 days at the dealer. I ordered the part by VIN. A couple days later I took it out of the box. I removed the old unit and tried to install the new one. It appeared to be indenticle, but it was 2 inches shorter where it meets the rear center reflector. The part number of what I recieved was 964 631 908 01. I called the dealer and explainer what the problem was. He asked for the part # on my old unit and put me on hold. When he returned, he said that my unit superceeded to what I had recieved. I stated that was impossible. What am I to do with the 2 inch hole! Stuff a rag in it, and cover it with silver duct tape?? The dealer said he would check the situation out and get back to me. It has been 3 weeks, and no answer. I thought all 964 bodies were the same. I have spent 35 years with the 65-89 cars. This new fangled stuff is new to me.

The cracked unit is back in the car so it would be driveable. It's quite simple. The replacement unit is physically 2 inches shorter than what's in the car. Imagine trying to fit a new windshield in your car if the replacement windsheild was 2 inches smaller than the opening.

Rick, my 89 C-4 is identical to my 94. Maybe the replacement lens is a mistake??

Well, if it is a mistake, then what does it fit? Not a 993, or 996, or 997.
