Question Has anybody used this part?

The PO of my car told me that he had put in upgraded chain tensioners. A quick look at the engine, and it is obvious that it was not the Carrera tensioner update. Looking back through the stack of receipts I found one from Performance Products dated 11/98. It list a # 901557 (HP chain tensioner). I emailed PP, they said that they had not listed that part in some time and had no info on it. Have any of you used this part? Do I still need to think about doing the Carrera tensioner update?

I don't think so. It is not the same part number as the hydrastop. I was looking at the hydrastop as a temporary fix until budget permits the Carrera tensioner update.

If it is clear you don't have Carrera pressure fed chain tensioners and that's what you want, then does it really matter what is in there? They may have just replaced the original with a similar tensioner or a solid racing type of tensioner. Easy enough to examine by taking one of the covers off and having a look. Take a picture and post it.
You will need a new gasket, but it is worth knowing exactly what you have.

Clarke,

One thing that is really more important than the type of tensioner in place is whether or not the chain wheel carriers are the double-bushing type or not???

If there are 10 mm spacers in place between the 'upgraded' tensioners and the chain wheel carrier on the 'spud' ... then the chain wheel carriers weren't replaced with the double-bushing type!

The 1980.5 style tensioners were often called 'Turbo' tensioners back in the day ... and many suppliers felt it was important [read profitable] to push the replacement tensioners, rather than the true upgrade to double-bushing chain wheel carriers!

The spacers are on the same invoice. So I should replace the chain wheel carriers?

Clarke,

Yes, the wider double-bushing carriers spread out the loading on the bushings, and eliminate the tendency to bind ... what is now believed to be the actual cause for all of the tensioner failures before the Carrera pressure-fed tensioners were introduced.

Thanks for the picture. Now I know what to look for. Can this be done in the car, or am I looking at dropping the engine. The budget is a little tight right now and I don't want to get into the long "while I'm in here" list.

Warren - when were the double-bushing chain wheel carriers introduced?

Can you post a comparison pic of them?

Yes, It can be done without a engine drop. I believe that its in Wayne's book(101 projects). I'm not 100%, I'll check when I get home.
