Is this a standard SC steering wheel?

This will be a simple question for most of you i am sure. Sorry in advance for the crappy pics but is the wheel pictured the standard SC wheel? The only reason I ask is that someone saw it and thought it was not.

Thanks

Yep. Some 84' Carreras had it too.

Yes it is. It's also the wheel for '84 Carreras.

edit: Damn jorian beat me to it.

There was a "sport" wheel that was put on some SCs, also used on the mid-year Carreras, that looks very similar to the standard SC wheel.

It is slightly smaller diameter, maybe a bit thicker rim, but the biggest visible difference is the spokes are a bit "higher" up on the wheel.

Most people wouldn't notice it if you didn't tell them. But the "Sport" wheel is pretty rare, and can command some decent bucks ($700, compared to $50 for a standard wheel).

Your pics are blurry, but yours does look standard.

Here's the Sport wheel:

That's a cool looking shift knob in that pic of the sport wheel. Anybody know where you can pick up something like that?

That wheel was first used on early turbos, and also on the 74/75 Carreras, but with a thicker grip.
I think in became standard on SC's in 1980 with the 1978/79 having a four spoke wheel.
How's my memory doing ?

The 3 spoke, like V8 Ranch pictured in his first post, has always been standard on the SC.

While there were probably some pre-production SC pictures used on various brochures over the years showing the earlier 4 spoke wheel, and maybe a very early SC or two slipped through with the older four spoke wheel, but 99.9% of 1978 and 1979 SCs came with the 3 spoker, at least in the US (never quite sure about Euro).

standard on an sc, while same wheel was considered the 'sport upgrade' on a middie, at least in '74. i had both my original 'base' 4-spoke wheel and a 3-spoke purchased off of e-bay.

I have the thicker "Carrera" wheel on my car. Here are some pics that attempt to show the differences. Sport on right.

Hmmm...

Well, after seeing the last 2 pics, I am actually starting to wonder. My wheel seems a bit thicker to me. Any chance someone with one handy could measure the diameter for me? Maybe it is mute point if the spokes are in fact higher up though.

When I purchased my three point wheel the worthless lying skank (popular E-Bay dealer) that sold it to me said it was from a '75 Carrera. I don't really know; it is leather covered and appears like the wheel shown above on the right. However it does measure just slightly larger than an inch in diameter (1.08" to 1.12"). Perhaps someone can clarify the two different diameters for us. BTW V8, I think that's a moot point (to reduce or remove the practical significance of; make purely theoretical or academic.) but then again, so is mine.

V8_ranch, the one that is in your pics is the skinnier wheel.

Hey guys, no clue on the mats. They were in the car when I bought it 7 years ago. I cleaned them really good and usually throw a carpet remnant overtop when driving the car to keep them clean.

So, after measuring the wheel rim thickness, I get about 1-1/8th for the standard wheel and just over 1-1/4 for the Carrera wheel. It doesn't sound like much, but trust me, it really makes the car. Think about how you are connected to your 911 when driving it. Your hands and what contacts the seat.....
