need suggestions on tranny problem (915)
Hi All
My problem starts with HELP!! My trans shifts ok nice and smooth when the car isn't at operating temp, but when it reaches temp, it shifting gets stiff, and its harder to find first gear. to the point that I need to almost force it into gear. Also coming out of 5th it seems to grind with the reverse gear. I've changed the oil in the trans, re..re adjusted the linkage, Still sameo, sameo. I also noticed while under the car that I can push up on the front of the trans and have about 1/2" play at the trans mounts. I checked the bolts and they are tight. Does this mean I need new mounts? Any help from anyone would be much appreciated. By the way this is a '77 911s. Thanks Tim in Sac. |

You ABSOLUTELY need new trans mounts. And if those are dead then so are your motor mounts. (Same part # so get 4 of them). As far as the shifting goes, I think everyone on this board is screaming, "PUT IN SWEPCO 201 90wt!!" Also i might add that it is supposed to be impossible to nick reverse on a 73 and later shifter as they have an interlock lever in the shift tower. If you pull back your shift boot you can see it. Maybe your bushings are dead, making proper adjustment impossible. You'll need the ball cup, shift rod and shift coupler bushings. Try the above and let us know how it goes.

I have heard that swepco is amazing stuff. I will have to make that a priority. Yes, the reverse block is working, will look at the bushings sounds logical. Should I use the solid mounts or go stock? Any performance gain? I am one to turn the radio down and the rev's up for my listening pleasure.
Thanks for your help. Tim in Sac |

If you are grinding reverse, there is only one explanation ... your clutch is dragging, i.e., not fully disengaging, which means your freeplay is inadequate, meaning zero! Adjust your clutch's freeplay to 3/4" ... and the grinding will disappear!

Feelyx, I'd recommend the Club Sport mounts. They are firmer than stock. I think the solid mounts are a bit much for a street car.
