Borla Muffler experiment
For those that care......I have been searching for the best stainless steel
dual in, dual out muffler. I've found some good ones but they all seem too loud for the local small venue tracks. The 911 sport muffler, was about 93 dbA. The B&B muffler was 94dbA. Looks like I will have to buy a stock 911 early oem muffler, unless anyone else has a better idea....? Today I got kicked off the San Diego autocross with my brand new Borla....came in at a whopping 96 dbA. (limit is 92) Of all of them, this one sounded the best...like a Porsche should...but it looks like the puppy is up for sale. Pics available, used one weekend...down to San Diego and back with about six laps at the track.... $600 plus shipping. Retail is over $1,000.00 Michael Zois Santa Barbara CA PI# 18892 REA# 05214 Rennlist #990622-1268 '83 Cabriolet, euro |

Mike,
Rather that ditching the Borla, why don't you consider putting a SuperTrapp disk assembly on each of the outlets of your Borla? SummitRacing.com used to carry both 4" and 5" inlet assemblies without the pre-muffler, just for racing applications. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

If you've seen the ends, that is not an option....the Borla has four two inch outlets, two on each side. They also have a heat shield surround that is welded together...not an optimal option.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. |

Mike, I was searching ebay and found a set of SSIs at carreraclassics@yahoo.com used. He also had some stainless steel German muffler with 3 inch outputs, one on each side. I do not know more about it but it may be another alternative for you. His name is Wayne. If you get the make and model, you may get the specs. Good luck.

Unfortunately if you check the past threads I think you'll see some "love notes" about Wayne @ carrera classics...buyer beware. No personal experience w/ him just what I've heard.

Mike how old was your 94db B&B i've had 4 different generations of B&B on my car. Each generation has gotten quieter. The latest gen was issued ~2-3 yrs ago and can be identified by the smaller hole on the pass side outlet. Not the tip mind you, the hole out of the muffler cannister is only ~.5". I've never had a problem even at Lime Rock which is very strict about those things.

Yeah, Carrera Classics rang a negative bell upon reading this post. Better check into this guy before you buy.

Yeah, I've heard about this guy and will avoid him like the plague...but most everyone gets stuck by him 'cause he does not take credit cards or ship COD...I recommened that you protect yourself and not send money to someoen you don't know or have done business with....
As to the B&B, I don't know how old it was, I bought it used....it was just little less loud as the Borla. [This message has been edited by mikez (edited 01-07-2001).] |

Mike,
How about cutting a passenger side outlet, adding a 2nd outlet to a factory dual in, single out muffler? This is what Im planning to do. I've heard of people doing this successfully and Im told that it works well and is a bit louder than stock, but not obnoxious! My only problem right now is a source for 2 3" or 4" stainless outlets to weld on. (Will look cool as hell, w/o the rediculous price) Let me know if you hear where you can get such tips. Best of Luck, Nick. ------------------ __________ Nick Shumaker 1982 911SC Coupe |

Nick - that is similar to what I did with my muffler. I took a pre-74, cut it open, and re-routed the guts for dual outlet. You CAN just cut a hole on the opposite side, but beware of the hole size. More than 1/2 inch gets loud fast! Start with a small hole and work your way larger until you get the required sound level, then weld on the tip. The tips can be purchased at industrial plumbing stores. Here is a pic of the 3" stainless duals. Hope you can see the outlets.
