If you had to extend your 02 sensor wiring...

After reading a long thread on the Bosch 02 sensors by Wil and still be somewhat confused, I'd like to ask this question.

I'm in the process of installing a 3.2 engine on a '70 chasis and just found out the 02 sensor wiring is not long enough to reach up to the connectors in the engine bay. I can re-drill the sheetmetal or move the connectors on the engine bay closer but it seems that my best solution would be to lenghten the wires by about 8 inches for some good slack. No redrilling if I extend the wires.

It also looks like the 02 sensor was replaced by a generic one by the previous owner because I can see all 3 wires were spliced. See pic below.

Some people suggested solder and shrink tubing, but then the "breathing" is interrupted, others crimp and shrink tubing. Is there a definitive answer? will any similar gauge wire work to extend the existing wires?

I also checked on the generic Bosch 15735 02 sensor to see if getting a new one with enough wire to splice to the existing connectors, but the local store is selling them for about $135

My SC O2 sensor was just one wire. I bought a generic one, cut, crimped, and shrinkwrapped it.

I'd lengthen the wires. Can you use your old O2 sensor as a donor for the wire stock?

I think the breathing stuff is BS, no offense to anyone who believes otherwise. I also would use some sort of heat resistant coating, like the factory does. The coating is not tight like shrink wrap. I imagine you could get some heat sleeve material for spark plug wires and cut to fit.
