What do I need for 915 upgrade?
Hello Everyone.
I hope you guys can help me out. I am in the process of putting a '82 915 into my '70 911T. I was wondering what I will need for the upgrade. The tranny has '40k on it and it has been out of a car for a little while. So figuring out all of the little parts are my goal. I know I will need new axles to go with the 6-bolt pattern. Also newer speedo, stick-shift, clutch kit. My mechanic said that for matching the different pull length I will have to put the larger end on my pedal assembly. I am more worried about getting everything as far as the linkage goes. I have very little experience with the 915(other than pulling my engine off of one). So I'm trying to make sure I get everything for it. I am getting the '82 because I want taller gears. The guy I'm buying it from also has a '74 that I understand will be much easier to upgrade to. But he doesn't know how many miles are on it, or what condition it is in. But he drove the car with the '82 for a couple of years and said it is perfect, and will stand behind it(for $1000, with shifter and speedo). So I would definitely lean towards it. Plus I'm having a hard time finding a decent 915 anywhere, for a good price. Thanks, Ed '70 911T w/930/10 |

Ed,
I'm not sure you will need anything additional but the '82 clutch cable. And I don't think any modification of the pedal cluster is needed, either! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I think Vertex sells rebuilt units, with a warranty, for around $1,100. Of course, my memory may be foggy.
Why would you want taller gears on a 70? Downhill racing? ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe |

Be careful about those taller gears. My experience has been that the later 915 boxes are ridiculously tall. Granted, you have an early T model (which still doesn't have the torque of a 3.0 or 3.2), but test drive a 77 and later 2.7S car, and you will notice they are absolute dogs with those gears. This is strictly an opinion, but I think those gears are way too tall and will wreck the sporty "feel" of your car.

Actually, I think vertes does sell the rebuilt units for that price, but as with the exchange basis, so I would have to come up with a 915 to give them in the first place. Then add shipping, etc, etc. I am replacing my original 901 5-speed not the sportomatic, so I won't have to get a new pedal assembly.
With regards to the prior reply about putting taller gears in an early car. I have already replaced the original 2.2(anyone need one?) with an '83 3.0 Euro motor with all of the lower torque that comes with it(it has the Carrera case). And so pushing the taller gears will be no problem at all. In fact I think I am wasting the torque by having to shift far too often(not a good thing with a 901 with 120k on it). The main reason I want the taller gears is highway driving. I run about 2500 rpm at 55mph right now. I would like to be able to run around the same rpm at 75mph for gas mileage. So, if anyone has done this change recently, let me know of any problems you have run into. Thanks, Ed |
