1997 Porsche on a '77 frame

Let me first say without this forum I would have never gotten where I am today with my car. You guys are awsome.

To start I have a cousin who had a porsche sitting in his garage for two years. After a family dinner we got to talking about the porsche, which also had rear left quarter panel damage from a previous hit. I told him we should get the beauty back on the road, which he happily agreed to.
Brought the beauty home [Pics of her, more clear ones will come soon] This is a 1997 body sitting on a 1977 frame, where the frame was rescued from rotting in a barn farm. the rest is the end results done by my cousins friends.

Honestly, I never worked on a porsche let alone sat in one before in my life, but with the help of this forum, and yes I never even had to post a topic until now, everything I needed to know was covered by other users post! The first week I got her, I fixed the hole in the quarter panel. and the four weeks since I have been working on the motor which did not want to start. Well the last week I finally got her started and when she starts nothing but thick white smoke would come out and Idled real rough. After a bit the smoke would subside, but when I put my hand near the rear right tail pipe, splatters of oils specks would appear on my hands(fresh oil, not smoot). I was told that before being parked it ran just fine. I checked the injectors and they were a tad dirty, cleaned them, new battery, fuses, oil change, points gappedand plugs changed, gas drained and filled, still to no avail. I know these cars had oil leak problems, but this one has oil all over the bottom so I cant tell where it is coming from. I am at a point where alot of us get into on a big project where where we get stuck on a part of our process and take a break to figure the next step The motor is the original 1977 six cylinder. 2.4 I would imagine. I will post more details if needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry about the above post. This person does not represent any of us on this BBs. A moderator will find that post and remove it and possibly ban this fool. I'll reply to your question separately.

Yougo, You may want to clean up your Pelican "Home page". The moving button and JibJab clip make it look like your post is insincere.

silverc4s (Bill), what was all that about???? Sorry yugo65, I have no clue why that poster replied the way he did. Anyway, welcome to the board! The engine in your car is most likely a 2.7 litre. That is a nice car! I have a '76 911 converted into a 1983 widebody cabriolet. There are quite a few of us "non-original" guys here as well. Here is a great place to start to learn about the 911: http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/technical_specs/911_guthrie_faq.htm

Here's a question...how can you have a 97 body on a 77 frame? Aren't all Porsche's unibody and there is no frame?

I think that he meant a body kit on the '77. I was presented a similair question when I said my frame was of a '76. Of course back then, I knew nada about Porsches!

I would be surprised if yugo ever posted here again. This thread sounds horrible. Its like he walked into a family fight.

Wow, talk about more posts on slamming instead of helping! Thanks to the ones who defended me. But I came here for help, and a few were more worried about the site than my questions. Maybe I will just take it down, so the "Walnut Crackers" can quit squeezing their cheeks and let stool out. Thanks 86_911 for the info, and thanks for the welcome Techweenie and Noah.

So, as not to run away from anything, I just got done doing the injectors, took them out and cleaned them good. The motor ran a little better. Speaking of my remark about 97 body on 77 frame, as 86_911 wrote,
Quote:

is what I meant. Remember, I never touched let alone sat in one before, so my terms or descriptions will improve as I read and digest the information. Any help with the smoke part and idling is still appreciated.

I would take it to a place that can steam clean the engine, or try to clean it up at home as much as possible. It can be pretty difficult to hunt down a leak when there is oil on everything.

Well that was interesting! I'm not sure how this thread went so wrong so fast but on to the topic.....I'll offer what little I know to help.

Fyi, some general info to help get the ball rolling- your engine is probably a 2.7 liter, which was the typical mill for midyear (74-77) cars. There are numerous updates one would want on this engine as from the factory it had some serious issues. Do a search on 2.7 engines. Chances are the updates have already been done. Unfortunately those updates won't solve problems arising in an engine that hasn't been properly stored.

For pic posting I use imageshack-no affiliation-it's just super easy.

imageshack

Just browse your computer for the pic, click "host it" and copy the href.....link. Paste directly into your subject line and viola! pic in text. I would love to see the car.

Good luck and welcome.

Your welcome Yugo65 . I use Irfanview to resize, and save all of my images under jpg form. You can download it for free here: http://www.irfanview.com/
I also use a similair photo hosting site that Sebring suggested, but it gets annoying to wait for the site to resize the photo, whereas Irfanview does it instantly and has quite a few more options. Hope that helped!

That's a good point. I resize to 680 x 480 before submitting. Then it's a matter of seconds to host the pic.

Welcome to the board, Yugo.

As for pics, I simply load them straight from my hard drive. Easy.

Thanks for the info, I have irfanview but never used it, maybe now would be a good time Thats a good idea about the engine cleaning, I will do that as soon as it is running to where I want it to.

On with an update. Last night while watching my raiders let another one go, I decided I did not clean the injectors quite good enough before, so taking them out one by one, I also blew them out. Lo and behold a few were pretty clogged. Then when I got to my last one, of course, the fuel line had to snap I am now with three patches of bald spots on my head as opposed to two before. Is it possible or some trick to cut it and re-insert the tube or am I just hoping for dust? To me it looks impossible, unless there is a way to get it on. Thanks for all the input!
