Yes, Porsche fenders use a butyl tape mastic. I have 2 rolls with a Porsche part number 000 043 129 00 called Abdichtband (as I'm doing body and paint soon). Butyl is non-skinning (forever sticky) and remains pliable. The Porsche tape is a little thinner than 1/8" though.

Does anyone have the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) of the Porsche Terostat tape? I need to know it's chemical properties before I can get my car body e-coated. I tried contacting Porsche for the MSDS sheets and they have not come though. Seems Porsche doesn't care about customer requests.

I think I found the MSDS sheets and the Terostat ribbon is manufactured by Henkel (Loctite fame)

Ok, my head hurts now. What does this mean Randy?

It's what historians do instead of research (which is what scientists do).

What would I be researching? I did not start this thread, only offered my opinion like many others do on this board.

Did I miss something?

only because you inspired me to do some research i found a product at Stoddard that could have saved me some $ because i had to buy 5gal of tectyl 846 tranny wax outside the P domain. I think it's the same?

"Rustproofing Body Wax- Rustproofing for inner body panels. Does not harden. Yellow. 1 liter. SIC.999.120.00"

SIC = Stoddard Imported Cars in-house pn's

Huh - great find! Think it will stick well to the Mg cased trannys?

This is the stuff my body shop uses to join body parts such as the fenders. It works great, retains flexibility, and adhesion. The problem with using material such as caulk strips is that is doesnt do anything to adhere and join. It just kind of sits there.

I made my own fender sealing tape using 3M Strip Calk (a.k.a. "dum dum") by placing strips on wax paper and flattening them to 3/4" wide in my 12-ton shop press between two steel plates.

Then once the fenders were mounted, I ran a nice bead of 3M UltraPro 08300 Seam Sealer down each weatherstrip lip / fender flange over the top of the soft "dum dum" and formed it into the corner with my finger. Paint will stick to the seam sealer and create a water-tight barrier.
