what is the name for panel seal gunk?

can anyone help me with what the name is for the roll of gasket material "monkey ****" I call it that goes btwn the front fenders and the body to seal it and help fight off rust and to prevent metal to metal rubbing? This "MS" is Black or a dark color.

Its like a roll of semi cured semi sticky caulking that for those who have replaced window panes in your home, you can get DAP or similar stuff that used to be dark colored and it looked just like monkey ****. Thanks dad for calling it that as thats what sticks in my head and now I CAN'T REMEMBER THE CORRECT NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not you, the product! I use 3M strip caulk, aka dum dum. Maybe terostat tape? Basically a butyl tape-this is flat, the dum dum comes in little strips about 1/4" thick.

Thanks Matt. Is this the stuff to use now as porsche or wurth no longer makes this? the 3m stuff better? Is this the studd that you squish btwn the panel and body?
Any tricks on how you have used this, presuming you have?

I just lay a bead of the dum dum on the mating surfaces-make sure there's not bare metal just for good measure.

Flatten the stuff out a little or it can change the fit of the fenders.

Apparently you cannot call it dum-dum in either Orygun or Gnu Mexico -- there is an old thread on it.

There is some wider stuff too that might be better for what you want.

I'd call it strip caulk for max. communcations efficiency

if I wanted the ribbon I'd say 'I want that stuff like strip caulk but in a wide ribbon'....

I think the stuff just holds water. When you pulled the fender what did that area look like? Mine was very rusty, yet no were else was it like that up front.
I think if you ran a bead of the more modern sealers around the mounting holes and between the fender and the body on top where the trunk seal goes, that should keep water from coming up from the wheel well.

IMHO I think it would drain and dry better.
And the trunk seal will hide the bead anyway.
I know it's not for the purist, but I don't want to find what I found the last time.

I think you hit it. I was just talking to a almost retired body guy (early 60's yr old) and he said , "oh that monkey s&^t stuff", I almost fell off of my chair laughing so hard. He said what is so funny? I told him that is what I was told to call it from my dad cus' there is no real good name for it...and...if you break off a piece about about 4" long, you have the proverable Bill Murray thing he found in the golf club pool...LOL LOL

ago as a porsche item...roll of a caulking stuff to "properly re-fit your body panels to your car like the factory oroginally did" and I cant find it now. It su^&s getting older and forgetting more than one knows ;-)

+1 when I did my bodywork I left out the fender seal gunk AND didn't glue in the trunk gasket in the channel. now I can inspect the seam anytime. so far no issues, it is able to dry out when it does get wet, which IMHO is one of the keys to rust prevention. dry metal does not rust. Don.

IIRC, it (or the bigger version of it) is supposed to keep the fender from rubbing and hitting on the rest of the unit body on bumps, etc.

The black gooey sealant that goes into the back of the speed nuts is also known as dum-dum, because it's used for lots of dumb things.





The dum-dum seals things up, which in this case is smart.

The best stuff I've seen is made by 3M (Lord, what isn't?). It's called Strip-Caulk, but most folks call it Dum Dum. You can buy it at most auto parts stores. Although it is gooey, it can be removed even years later. What little residue it has is easily removed with denatured alcohol.

NOW, the question begs to be asked, what is the factory procedure to attach the front fenders to the tub? i.e. use the dum dum/3m material or not for the front fenders?

factory used the sealer. It's really up to you if you do it or not.
I won't be driving my car in crappy weather, snow/mud/ big rain storms, so I did not use it. Well I did use it around the fender bolt holes.
If you drive in all sorts of weather I would use it I guess.

I'd rather have it drain and dry then have the water sit there, but thats just me.

You might try Butyl tape, the tape is used on RV's, and it is 3/4" X 1/8" and does not retain water

1. I have herd of Butyl tape but what is it?
2. Is it a type of caulking in a roll?
3. Is it compressable to get the fender gaps accurate?
4. What is it used for on RV's?
5. by chance have a pic of what it looks like and/or in use?
