Installed my Steve Wong chip
I just got done instelling the Steve Wong chip I recieved in the mail today. I didn't have the patience to wait until tomorrow.
The chip comes nicely packaged in a bubble wrap envelope follow by a little plastic container that prevents it from moving around. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1174704645.jpg The installation was pretty straight foward, I didn't remove the seat, just slid it back, raised it to the highest position and worked my way unscrewing the 4 bolts connecting the Motronic Unit. I cracked the unit open and to my surprise I discovered that the car already had a performance chip installed, take a look: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1174704777.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1174704792.jpg The only bummer is now I don't really know what it felt like completly stock. I figured someone had been inside the box when I noticed the scratches of the flat head screwdriver that's needed to pry the metal tabs on the box. After installing the chip and checking the throttle linkage and operation of the micro switch, I took it out for a drive. Although I might not feel as big a difference if upgrading from a completely stock setup I still felt some improvement over the Auto Thority chip. The car just feels zippier if that's a word :) I'll do more drives in the next couple of days but overall I'm happy with the chip so far. Before I forget, can someone tell me what this cable does that's connected to the throttle? Is it just a throttle stop? Is it connected to some control? Is it supposed to slide? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1174705125.jpg |
Paul,
That is the cruise control cable. I had an Autothority chip in mine when I put my SW chip in. Just better all around performance but you are right in the fact that it is not as dramatic as going from the stock chip. |
Wait for it..... Wait for it.........
|
I know my car has a performance chip in it because I found the stock one when I was sorting through all the goodies that came with the car. Makes me curious on what's in there seeing how I have never looked.

I had the same in mine... Noticeable difference in low end torque. Most dramatic change? Fuel economy! Wait until you do a road trip, and you'll be very pleasantly surprised!!!

Welcome to the club.

PatrickB ,
"Fuel economy! Wait until you do a road trip, and you'll be very pleasantly surprised!!!"? I thought SW chip increase fule, according to SW on the other thread. Which means fuel economy will decrease. Isn't this a basic concept of any kind of performance chip? Am I missing anything here? |
Of course when you romp around at fuel throttle, your fuel useage will increase... However, at higway cruise, the map has it leaned out a bit more! On a long trip last summer, I was seeing 28 mpg at constant speeds above 85 mph! Half that trip was at 100 mph! Stock muffler, but cat bypass... With the "other chip" I would be lucky to see 20 mpg... Stock would be around 23mpg under similar conditions... Driving around town, I would normally see around 17 mpg. with SW CHip, I ave. 19 mpg. That's driving conservatively, shifting at 3500rpm.

Just on the edge...... Holding breath.... Can't wait much longer.....

That chip can't possibly work blah blah blah.
Just saving some other people a bit of work. PM me if you want to sell your old chip. |

Crap.... All the elements in place for a perfect pounce and nothing. Oh well...
By the way I love my wongified 85 3.2 it really isn't a porsche without the chip. We need to get new script made for deck like WONG911 or a 911W... Heah I like the 911W idea Put chip in runs like - to quote my dad (Striped ass ape) he liked wild kingdom.... Take chip out to test high idle from air leaks runs like crap. Put chip back in (same above mentioned ape) |

PatrickB,
Does that mean we will gain low end and lose some high end? Also Lorenfb mentioned about reducing safty margin from the detonation point. Does anyone have any info on this? Howcome everyone keep ditching Lorenfb. If he's wrong, why no one who has knowledge on this prove that he's wrong instead of ditching him? I had chip before (not SW and not 911). Honestly I didn't feel gain at all, not fuel saving either. In fact after a bunch of chip, air filter, exhaust, I lost fuel economy bad. But there are other factors involve right? I understand that and I have not much knowledge on this so I want to hear from both sides, real experience and knowledge too. Butt dyno.. uhh.. ehh. Thanks all. |
Is Loren always in a crappy mood? He sure doesn't seem like very much fun to be around.
I have read many of Loren's repetitive posts, & I have read Steve Wong's insightful comments. Steve seems to really know what he is doing -- what he says makes great sense. I happen to love the improved drivabilty with my SW chip. Better mid-range power, in particular. I am very pleased. |
Loren,
You got a mouth like a puss infected pimp stick. Id listen to you if you would produce imperical data or something rather then your typical diatribe. side by side same car Wong chip versus what ever the hell your blabbing about how you can create the same thing...... The old saying goes put up or shut up |
Dave, You just didn't wait long enough:D :D
Same old hyperbole for Loren, nothing new to add. Then again he has not been successful with his own chip. So... With my 3.2+ SW Chip I was getting an average of 28mpg at 85mph on a 350 mile trip each way. Each car will be somewhat different. On in-town I was getting 20mpg and I never baby the car, it sees 5000-6000 rpm regularly is there any other way.;) There is a lot to the feel of what the SW chip does for the drivability of the 911 that can't be measured on a dyno or any other way other than the feel of what is happening. We hear it over and over again on this board. Just like comparing beers, the only way to know which is better is to experience the difference. There is a money back guarantee on the chip so what have you got to lose. No one has come up with any destroyed engines to prove the damage that a naysayer among us keeps preaching.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/beerchug.gif |

For further entertaining reading, watch Loren make a fool of himself on the following 123 threads: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=2928116& sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending&exactname=yes &searchuser=lorenfb Make some popcorn, pour yourself a beer, enjoy! Seriously, the ball has been in Loren's court for years. He has nothing but BS comments to make about Steve's chips, basically because he tried to market his own line of chips (how's that for hyprocisy?) and failed miserably. Now he's on a vendetta. Frankly, I don't know why the moderators continue to put up with it, unless they're getting a sick thrill from watching the guy melt down. |
