915 final drive

How difficult is it to change the final drive in a 915. I'm referring to a 1972 and on

I'm guessing you want to go from 7.31:1 to 8.31:1 final drive?

It's quite quick, simple and easy if you swap the gearbox completely for another one with that ratio...

You could change all the gearsets, that's $$$$$.

As I understand it, changing out the crown wheel and pinion is not a DIY job unless you're skilled, inventive, resourceful and knowledgable - it requires special tools.

I asked a very experienced Porsche independent if he could fit a WEVO side cover on my 915, his reply was "I'd need to shim it afterwards, I haven't done one in 20 years and I don't have the tools anymore".

I took it to a gearbox specialist instead.

Good luck!

Garage
Your 1972 has a mechanical speedo drive.
I think there was only one year with a mechanical speedo drive and 8:31 R&P ('75? '76?). I just helped a friend do this swap.
