Unhappy 1970 front wheel hub needed

I recently spun the outer wheel bearing and it WELDED the race to the spindle. anyone that has a wheel hub for sale please give me a call. Also I've got "new" struts that have a larger bearing nut than the old one. The old struts had a bolt that grabs the ball joint at the bottom of the strut, and the new struts have a larger bolt hole and is not threaded, anyone that has these bolts for sale give me a call. The wheel hub shows damage from the outer race blowing up..this was not a good day.
thanks

John,

Look at the good side of this failure.

Your original struts with the pinch bolt were a disaster waiting to happen. I won’t instruct in a ’69-71 911 with them.

Your new struts don’t take a bolt but a “wedge pin” with a steel lock nut and hardened washer. It also uses a different ball joint with a “vee” notch rather than a “half-moon” cut-out. VERY important to have the proper ball joint and hardware.

I recommend you find a pair of ’74 and later hubs. They have the centering feature for the wheels. They are identical as far as brake rotor mounting.

One thing to measure on your new struts is the caliper mounting. It is possible your original brakes use 3.0” mounting and the new struts 3.5” mounting. If so, find some Carrera calipers and rotors.

Best,
Grady

John,

With 18 posts I should say WELCOME

Your question is what this Forum is all about. Many here have done these things (and some fought the battles finding the correct collection of parts) to have this work seamlessly.

One of the real “arts” of Porsche is the combination of parts (some later and some earlier) to make something better than Porsche did originally (given their knowledge at the time, economics and regulations).

Here we can build a ’70 911 far better than Porsche did with ’69 engineering.

That is no slight on the engineers at the time. We have the benefit of hindsight.

Best,
Grady
