GHL Headers & Carrera

Looking into fitting GHL Headers (with heat) to an 87 carrera. I was wondering if i have to purchase the GHL Muffler to fit the headers or will the stock muffler still fit?

Stock muffler should still fit and bolt right up to the GHL headers. Why not just back date your heat with SSI and a free flow exhaust?

Nope pretty sure both GHL and B & B use propriety spacing, unless you buy the super duper ghl (bigger bore and SSI spacing) version from Steve Wiener ($$$$)

With the SSI's you can use just about anything. Unless you have some sort of cam work - I doubt a stock carrera could benefit from anything bigger than SSI's.

Biggest bang for your buck would probably be a euro premuffler and sport muffler (like MK) and steve wong chip, incrementally you can probably gain a few more ponies by going the SSI route and a sport muffler (and SW chip) - but it will cost alot more to get there.

Jeremy is right; GHL & B&B headers both have proprietary collector spacing so the only mufflers that fit are their own. We do have a special GHL system made just for us that accepts any factory type dual-inlet muffler, but its not cheap.

SSI's, while unquestionably well made, are slightly too small for a 3.2 if you are looking for power. SSI's on a 3.2 make low and mid-range torque.

I stand corrected.... I know the SSI's and GHL on my SC bolt right up to eachother so I was basing my assumption off that combination.

Hi Ben:

It really depends on the customer, what performance expectations there are, and whether the car is used for DE events.

SSI's on 3.2's (or larger) do limit HP and for an engine with other modifications such as cams, Extrude-honed intake manifolds, the GHL 1 5/8" system is much better,...... The larger the engine, the bigger the difference over the OEM system or SSI's.

For the average Carrera driver, its a toss-up on SSI's depending on smog compliance. We do have cats available for the GHL system where that is a criteria.

Its not a simply answer due to all the variables involved here.

question.......showroom stock F-class. 1987 3.2 cab. collector insurance ie. no cat needed. have stock exhaust 1 in-1 out to GHL exhaust with straight pipe in place of cat.

when it comes time to rebuild..........what is my best PCA legal exhaust while still retaining heater capabilities. or should i just keep the stock oem exhaust as such.

yeah i know, why does he want heat in arizona???? does 9 degrees above zero at my house 2 weeks ago make you wonder? how about -12 below at my buddies house in flagstaff! thanks

Consider this a bump. Are the SSI main tubes 1" 1/2 and that is why they will hold back the 3.2 at higher RPMS?

s.

yes just like the basic rules of domestic carrs larger primaries flow better at higher rpms. the one thing though is that bigger primaries will give up a bit of lower rpm tourque

Hey Ben,

Are the OBX Racing Exhaust Headers, which are basically knock off's of George's headers, even worth looking at for a 3.2?

1 11/16" primary tube
