Wheel Well Clearance on 73 with 205/55/15?

I am thinking of running 205/55/15 on my 73'T with 6 x 15 Fuchs on the street, not track. Is anyone doing this? If so, how is the ride? Will I have enough clearance?

I can't see any reason that 205/55/15's wouldn't work. I'm running 215/60/15s on all four corners of my '73E with no rubbing at all. I tried 225/60/15 on the rear but those rub and I haven't decided whether to roll the fenders, raise the height a bit and/or put in stiffer torsion bars to try to get them to work, since I like the beefer look in the rear, or just live with the 215s which work fine. Since these early cars were essentially hand made, each one is a bit different however so you never know until you try!

I have 205/60/15 on my 73.5 with no trouble whatsoever. The lower aspect ratio of 55 should assure clearance, but this shorter side wall may result, whether appreciable or not, in a harsher ride. I think the 205/60 gives a good ride and fairly aggressive look without being too low profile for the period.

Thanks David. How do you like the ride? Some have suggested that the beefier tires will transmit a lot of extra road vibration and I should just stick with the OEM 185/70/15. Do you find good cornering? Plenty of winding roads in VT!

My car is pretty much a weekend toy so I rarely go an any ride more than 75-100 miles. Because of this, ride comfort is not my biggest concern. That said, I've never had anything to complain about using the Falken Ziex ZE-512 tires I've had for about 2 years. These are high performance, but not ultra-high performance, summer tires and they are pretty easy to find. The handling is great and the ride quality is fine. Even my wife doesn't complain - and that's the real test isn't it!

I'm running 205/50-15s, and the ride is harsh. But I don't mind, it's great in the mountains and on the track. The harsh ride makes it feel more like a race car, which gives me a Walter Mitty experience. If I want comfort, I'll drive my wife's brand new Passat wagon. You probably should take a ride in a car with the harsher tires before making a purchase, though.
