Crazy Fuchs prices

A member of the board recently sold a bunch of 16"x9" Fuchs wheels. I think he sold 10 pairs. Each set was around $1650. There is a set of 16x7 and 16x9 with relatively inexpensive ES100s on e-bay with a buy it now price of $2750.

I am not here to debate whether these are good prices or not. I'm a firm believer of supply and demand.

BUT...

Let's say you get a set of 16x7, 16x9 Fuchs for $2500. That is an average of $625 per wheel for a set of USED wheels. We all know that as great as Fuchs are, cracking can come into play, regardless of how babied they were.

Now, aside from the desire to keep the stock look, why wouldn't someone spend an extra $500 and spring for a set of BRAND NEW 17" forged BBS rims (or some other brand for that matter)?

Is there something special about Fuchs that I'm not aware of, like they help with brake cooling or they keep the oil-leak gods appeased?

For the record, I love my car's look with Fuchs, but I have 16x6 and 16x7 wheels that are WAY overpowered by my 930 brakes. I also have a set of HEAVY gravity (probably) cast ROH 16x7 and 16x8.

Why would (should) I pay dearly for used Fuchs when there are modern solutions out there for not much more money?

Strength and weight are the two main things that come to mind....nothing like a forged wheel...

You won't find a lighter wheel than the Fuch, and it belongs on the car.

OK. I too pray at the chuch of light weight.

1) 17x9 BBS forged wheels are 21lbs or so. Not exactly heavy.

2) 17" Linsey wheels are, what, 15lbs?

How much does a 17x9 Fuch weigh?

Again, I understand the looks aspect, but does anybody REALLY care what the wheels look like at the track or while autoxing?

go into the classifieds section and do a search on fuchs and flippers... you'll see why the prices are up there. and that's besides the fact that they are a quality item AND have "that look" on the older cars

most people that go w/ modern wheels do so b/c they need to fit more tire and custom wheels can help with that

if fikse made 15" wheels, the only set of fuchs i'd have is for the street setup

I weighed my 16 x 9 Fuch on my bathroom scale. (we all know how accurate these are...)
16 lbs.

Very good question. And the answer is No, I would go with the lighter, stronger, larger wheels from BBS, Fikse, or other if the price is even close. Fuchs might be light, but I don't think my Fikse's FM10's are much heavier and 17" also which I think is the ideal size for Carrera's, not 15 or 16". I have both, (951 8x16 front and 9x16 rears) and I can honestly say the only people they really impress is other Porsche owners. Everyone else like the Fikse's better.

Um, er, pretty well stated...If you wanted OEM looks, 17's, that were well built and light, wouldn't Lindsey's be the ticket?

Look at Olsen's Black Betty, and tell me that aint so.

http://www.lindseyracing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=LR&Category_Code=GENWHEELSP2

If ya got a 6x16 laying around, Lindsey will turn it into a 17 x whatever width you choose for abt $370ish each. This way, track or street, ya got both bases covered.
Unless you just like swaping wheels.

Fuchs are likely to hold their value better than aftermarket wheels.

I have feeling if you go to sell a 911 in 10 years with the Fikse's of today it would have a similar effect in value as selling a 911 today with the gold BBS basketweave wheels that used to be de rigeur.

For track use I think 17's are the way to go though- keeping the fuchs for the street.

This is reason I have 16 inch Cups on my SC. I would love a set of 16x9 Fuchs but cannot spend that kind of dough.

So a pair of 9's will sell for $1650. (We know that!)
7's in nice shape are at least $300.
4 new ES100's mounted and balanced = $500. Total $2450.
Price for set on ebay is $2300. Hmmm!

p.s. forgot to add: center caps are included!

I am looking for a second set of wheels, and am debating between 7&9 Fuchs, or another set of Fikses. I like the idea of the classic look on a '73 for my street tires, and the car being somewhat of a "sleeper" for those not familiar enough with early Porsches to know that it's not supposed to have rear flares.

I have Hoosiers already mounted on 17" Fikses.

If I remember it right, the Lindseys save about a pound per wheel over stock because Lindsey's outside barrels are thinner than the Fuchs'.

Answer is: You shouldn't, if they're not what you want.

I agree with you. My car came from the PO with a set if Fikse's and I love them. The Fuchs look good but remind me of 60's muscle car Cragers they look dated which is fine if you want an older look to your car.

When the time comes for me to get some track wheels I will have a set of custom rims made to my specifications the cost will run in the 300 a rim range and will be lighter than a set of Fuchs.

Zonas - love your avatar = but have to disagree with you on that one. I have 8x16 951 fuchs and 9 x 16 fuchs

I also have a set of BBS 8x16 and 9x16 same offset wheels.

16.4lbs on the fronts (16 x 8) and 17.2 lbs on the 9x16's...

Fuchs are period correct - came with the car (so did BBS) look the part AND polish up nice. But 89911 is right -
