Parts Interchange
I've got a semi-rusty 66 912 that I got for free. It looks saveable to me, so I thought I'd use it for autoX etc., rather than restoration. My question is, is there a convenient source for what parts fit on what years? I know that many things did not change over the years, but many did especially from short to long hood and wheelbase. Looking at the PET, I see model years listed, so is that the best way? What about comparing part numbers? If a 901 341 161 01 is listed for both the 66 and 70 model years, does that mean I'm good?

First to answer your direct question; a part number identifies a specific part. That part may be used over one or many models. The technique is to compare part numbers among years and models. There is a huge amount on pelican as what parts are useful on what models, years, conversions, etc. The critical issue with your “free” chassis is safety. You don’t want brake, steering, suspension or chassis failure. As a light-weight (<1600#) 1750 cc 912, it can be a great AutoX car. It takes serious preparation to get there. Your first step is to properly evaluate the car. Please post some GOOD images all around, under and through the car. Is there a Pelican or PCA member local who can offer advice (and good eyes). The BIG issue is going to be rust and the integrity of the chassis. If the chassis is serviceable, there are all sorts of choices. A high performance 4-cylinder is a good choice. You can install a 911 engine, build it with much later parts, even build it as a (sorta) GT1 with 914-6 or Cayman conversion (using a 914 or an older Boxter). Your creativity (with help from the Forum) and budget are the only limitations. At some number it may be more economical to start with a good 911. Best, Grady

Thanks, Grady. I wasn't expecting your quick and valuable advice, but that's what I like best about this board. While I work on pictures, the abundance of parts would lead me to believe that most cars, short of completely gone, are worth a look. Floors can be replaced, as can the front pan, etc. - it's a function of my time and money. No? So if I tote up the cost of repair, and it makes sense to me, is there something else precluding the use of a car like this for autoX? Will it never be right no matter what? I liked the idea of saving this car because it is the earliest version - and therefore true to the original design. I love my '79, but it has evolved. Plus I'd really like to have the experience of learning to drive the SWB car. Sorry this is long, but I respect your long view of the subject.
