I always hoped Porsche would re-introduce the old-style targa. Doubt it'll ever happen, but the above pic shows others think about it too!
This could be sheer insanity, but I wonder how much work would be involved in taking a 993 cab and adding a targa bar, glass rear window and custom carbon-fiber targa top? That would be sweet. Cheers, Paul.

Marco,
Thanks! All the power & refinement of a 993 with classic targa styling. Brilliant! I'd love to see someone build one- especially on a silver 993 C4S. Paul.

Paul,
Actually that just a 993 shell on 69-89 911. See details at http://www.betterbodiesmotorsport.com/interiors/bodykits2/bodykits2.html Looks great, but with the cost of the conversion, probably more cost effective to go w/ a 993 to begin with. Marco

Marco,
it would be tricky from an engineering standpoint, but doable. Start with a 993 cab. Remove the top but save the front part where it hooks in above the windshield. Find a donor targa bar, rear window and top, probably from a 964. Mount the bar so that the leading edge is the same as the soft top was and the windows seal when closed. Remove the cover that hides the folded top on the 993, and remodel it to fit against the bottom of the rear glass. Take the rear part of the targa top and the front part of the soft top and build a new targa frame. Cover the new top with carbon fiber. Make a carbon fiber cover for the targa bar (good way of covering up gaps/making up differences). Done! I think it's doable for under $35k with a salvage-title 993 and no carbon fiber, probably $45k if done right. But that's WAG numbers. I suspect it's never been done because the 993 cab/targa are already out there, but I'd love to try it! Cheers, Paul.

They'll never bring it back. The targas never sold real well once they brought out the cab. I think they only built 158 C4 Targas in 90 and production was similarily low for targas throughout the 964 run.
