hot date saturday and 930 isnt starting

I have a 1986 930 I tried to adjust the idle In the 101 projects book it says to disable the idle volumetric control by jumping out two plugs, pg 102, I tried to start the car with the jumper on and it is no longer getting fuel. Fuses in the trunk are ok and the fuel pump works when the relay is jumped out. I cant pick this chick up in my work van. Thanks for any help.

Try replacing the fuel relay with your A/C relay. If this works, the relay is shot.

I swapped relays it didnt help. It seems like what pulls in the fuel pump relay is not working.

I'd rather have the hot chick who liked me in the old van that the hot chick who went out with me because of the 930!!!

I'm confused, if jumping past the relay will work for the fuel pump, why won't replacing the relay? Is there a burned out wire? have you checked all the fuses? Is the a/c relay bad? Relays are cheap insurance...

If you are getting spark but not fuel then I would start tracking down the fuel system.

FOR A CIS CAR

with ignition on and relay in place, no jumpers, remove the air filter housing top and lift up on the air flow sensor plate. You should hear the pump/fuel. Do not hold this for long as you can flood the car out!!! The sound should happen rather quickly and can be described as a cat meowling.

Don't hear? With the ignition off remove fuel pump relay from main fuse panel. with key ON, check for battery voltage at terminal 87a (Ignition switch, hot in start) and terminal 86 (RPM limiter switch) in relay socket. If battery voltage is not present check fuse 16. Check for breaks in red wire between relay socket and fuse panel.

With key off, check for ground at terminal 85 (to RPM limiter switch, from air flow sesnor contact) in relay socket. If faults are found, check air flow sensor plate contact (contact should be closed (continuity) with plate in rest position and open (no continuity) with plate raised.

Check wiring between air flow sensor contact and fuel pump relay.

turn ignition off and reinstall relay.

NOTES: If no faults are found with wiring at the relay socket, but the pump operates when the relay is bypassed the relay is faulty and should be replaced.

Hmmm, did you remove the relays with the ignition on? I have notes that say this can "damage" the relay.

OK, what year etc. Hopefully one of the gurus will chime in soon!

This thread is worthless without pictures (and we already know what a 930 looks like)...

...depending on that information, we can better determine if it's worth rushing to fix the car...

The car is a 1986 it has a motronc injection system. There is no voltage to the coil on the fuel pump relay. If I jump 12v to the normaly open contact on the relay the fuel pump runs and the car starts and idles. From what I read there is a dme relay that powers the coil under the seat I am going to order one and then I will see what happens.

P.S. This is the first time I am going out with this chick the only good thing about the van is the big back seat.

The day after...

CHICK'S GIRLFRIEND: Did you ride in his Porsh?

CHICK: His Porsh is really cute, but it's broken. We took his van. He said he'll take me out in the Porsh next time.

First off, I hope your date went well.

Second, from your description your car is not a 930 (aka 911 Turbo), it's a 911. Totally different engine management systems.

Just jump the fuel pump at the fuse box. Run a short piece of wire from the bottom of the fuel pump fuse to the adjacent fuse (closer to rear of car I think).

The DME relay is under the seat. It's 2 relays in one; one relay drives the DME and the other relay drives the fuel pump. This "fuel pump relay" gets its signal from the DME. If the DME doesn't see the flywheel spinning it doesn't enable the fuel pump ('cept during starting?).

It's OK with us if you tell your date that your powerful car is a Porsche Turbo.......

if you have to take the van don't sweat it - you've already got the date - and it weeds out any gold-digging hose bags. tell her the porsche is getting a new hydra-coil-gel-superpack-booster added.

Words from an old fart: Impress her with yourself. If it is the car that impresses her, she is not worth the time. Of course (for our female readers) if you require the car to be impressing...

I pulled off the air box and found the air flow sensor plug not attached. I plugged it in and the car still wouldnt start there was no ground at the pump relay. I installed a temporary ground and the car starts. I just bought the car a couple weeks ago and the wiring looks shady. The pump runs when the ignition is turned on should it only run when the car is started? And is there a way to increase the idle?
Thanks for the troubleshooting guide it really helped.
