Throw out bearing

How does one know when it is gone. The reason I ask is because a friend of mine has a whinning sound when he presses down on the clutch, but it goes away when he lifts his foot. The car shifts fine and the clutch engages perfectly.

I thought it was the other way 'round. Whining that goes away when you step on the clutch pedal, even slightly.
