how is thunderhill.... for the novice?
I plan on attending the SCCA driver's school in February. This will be my first track event and will be at Thunderhill. I am used to working within the limits of 205 front and 225 rear tires, but I will have 245s and 315s installed before the event. Am I correct in assuming that these will make things a little easier? I have a 79 930 with a new turbo and exhaust. How is the speed at Thunderhill? I currently have a healthy fear of fast decreasing radius turns. I welcome all tips. Thanks

Find out what configuration they'll be running. Thunderhill has something like 30 possible set-ups. If the back dog-leg straight is open, you'll be able to hit some pretty serious speed, going into a sweeping right turn. I think that's the only way they actually have problems with two much speed, there. More often, they break that straight up with a jog to the right and back, which cuts your speed down.
The wider tires will help, but the real improvement will come from having an instructor who can help you un-learn some of your street-racing tendencies and focus on cutting a smooth line and keeping the car balanced. It's a nice track, though. You'll have a lot of fun. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net |

I'll check out what their set up will be. I've read Secrets of Solo Racing and Vic Elford's Porsche High Performance Driving in preparation. I can't wait to get out there.
