Swivelling Shifter

Gentlemen,

May I ask the collective a question?

I have an 85 ROW Carrera (Manual Right Hand Drive) and whilst driving home this evening I noticed that the gear shifter had sort of come loose. It seems to be swivelling through 20° and feels all wierd. Is this a common problem and how easy is is a fix?

I am a bit of a noob but it looks like I need to remove the little console surrounding the gaiter to actually remove the gaiter to have a look at the gear stick at how it attaches.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Steve

One thing to check is the allen screw on the coupler. It is in-between and behind the seats under a metal plate, under the carpet. Sometimes it gets loose and causes slop in the shifter.

For some reason Porsche decided to make the Carrera shifters two pieces with the upper piece epoxied into the lower piece. The epoxy gets old and fails. This is probably what has happened to you. The shifter will actually rotate 360 degrees. You will have to remove the shifter assembly and either epoxy the two parts back together or do as I did and tack weld the two parts together. While you are in there you might as well replace the ball cup bushing and shifter bushings. Here are a couple of pictures of the shifter separated and back together:

Yes, Kurt is right. Mine came loose, and I found JB Weld on the shaft. A good tack is all it needs. Just get it rotated to the right spot and weld it.

Thanks Gents,

Methinks I'll do a Sport Shift Kit at the same time.

If you go with the factory short shifter, you might as well go through the shift housing and make it better (with or without the gizmo). Welding the shift lever is one of them. Here's some info:

I have had this happen twice. The first time was with the stock stick and the second time was with my short shift stick (2 weeks old!). Both times I drove over to a muffler shop and asked them to tack weld the stick. I bulled up the rubber boot and they were able to do the welding in car. Word of advise have a squirt bottle ready to cool the joint after it is welded of the heat will may melt your bushing.
