Too Many People on this BBS!!!
Sorry for all the problems - for some reason, the 911 BBS has been crashing the server! It's back up now, and I've upgraded the software to the latest version, and I've also triggered a lower-threshold on the timeout rates.
This afternoon, I'm going to stuff some more memory into the server, so it will be down for about five minutes again. Thanks everyone for your support, and your patience! -Wayne |

The fact that the board has hit a couple of little bumps recently only makes it clear how flawlessly this bulletin board set-up normally performs. This is a fantastic service you guys are providing, and it's really appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Wayne, Probably ought to hang an eleven blade fan on the back of that server.

I wonder what kind of server and software Wayne has running.
Although I really like WindowsNT and IIS for serving up web pages, the Ultimate Bulletin Board is awesome software that runs pretty much flawlessly on this site. Thanks Wayne! ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 The Porsche Owners Gallery |

Looks to me like it's running IIS 4 on NT4.
Have to admit I like this UBB software quite a bit, and prefer it to the usual email lists in many regards. Seems to run with few if any hiccups under pretty high traffic too. |

You folks would laugh out loud if I posted a picture of the machine that this runs on. Believe it or not, it's our own Pentium 350 mhz machine that has been running now continuously for exactly 2 years. It's getting to be time to upgrade, but as many of you in the web industry know, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I've been carefully monitoring the system over the past few months to see if it is overloaded - can't say that it has shown too much of that lately. Most people don't realize that a webserver really doesn't require too much processing power. I just shut the machine down to add some more memory (at 256 meg now), so hopefully that will help things. The UBB softward is great too, and runs in Perl - the same stuff that runs the rest of the website. Until the other day, the software has indeed performed very well! I would hate to have to prune some of the messages in the archives - I think that they are extremely useful to everyone here. I too like this format much better than email lists. If this forum keeps growing, then I might have to add a dedicated BBS server (which would be really easy to do). Thanks everyone for your support, and remember to support the server, and the BBS with all your parts purchases! Thanks again, Wayne |

Exactly two years huh? Sounds like the warranty has expired and has notified the machine that it is time to tits up...8^)

Ironically, the machine has gotten better with age. It used to know exactly when I went on vacation, and then would crash. This would force me to walk someone thru the reboot over the phone. I once had to do this from the 1 phone line available at the very bottom of the Grand Canyon. That was a bit stressful...

Wow. I've heard of people going out of their way to help, but we got Wayne going to the ends of the earth (on his vacation, no less!) to keep our BBS going. Cool.

I just placed my first order with Pelican Parts, and must say that the service was great. Same day shipping, email verification, on time delivery, no mistakes. This bulletin board (and the people on it) has been a good friend to me for the last three years or so, and I would feel weird without my daily visits here. So keep up the good work guys, and I will do my part by ordering all my Porshe stuff here in the future.

Thanks Wayne, you this board has provided more help than you can imagine. I look forward to meeting you at teh upcoming PCA Orange County Event.
One thing, a spell checker on a Porsche board that does not recognize "SC" or "targa" as a proper english word? Well I guess I have no excusses for my "typos" now. Thanks for that too, I guess. ------------------------- Paul 78SC Targa |

Thanks a lot for this service. When buying parts, I ask all of my fellow Porsche buddies to shop you first. I vote with my dollar every chance I get. I just wish you sold 911's... *sniff*

Hey Wayne. Us guys would appreciate if you kept it quiet that you have this board delivering 99++% availability and nanosec response times on an old PII running an interpreter [PERL], OK? Last thing we want is a posse of silk suit recruiters offering you megabucks to show the biggest public companies in this country how to get the lead out of their sorry IS operations.
First sign of this and a few of us will be over there to make sure you keep the faith:-) Awesome work Warren - many thanks. |

Wow. Really terrific, Wayne, Tom and everyone. Pelican is a happenin' thing.
Really great on parts too. Just received my order. Don't know if Tom wants this cat out of the bag, but he grabbed a competitor's catalogue and ordered the part for me, same price. Did it quickly too. ------------------ '83 SC [This message has been edited by Superman (edited 01-18-2001).] |

Wayne, No apology necessary. This is by far the best board on 911s going - the best format and the best "boardheads". Thanks to you and all the gang: Warren, Jack, Tyson, VIPRKLR, Superman and everyone else. I've learned alot - I'll contribute whenever I can add something.

Out of curiousity, what operating system are you running. By the way, thanks for the great work...both at Pelican Parts and the site. Bill Wagner |

Thanks Wayne for the site. I am considering a couple of 911s to buy and when I show up for negotiations, I bring along a printed page from your parts catalog to tell the seller what it will cost me to repair the things in the car! Seems to me the least we could all do is get the parts from the people that allow us to share all of this.

AllStar is selling 128meg SDRAM memory strips at 133MHz for $50.00!! I upgraded my PC to 256RAM and games and whatnot perform flawlessly. No financial interest, just to let you know. I had thought the problem was the rolling blackouts? In all events this 'board is great and has saved me mucho money!!! Thanks!! http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/shop.asp Jw |
