Lightest Street Mufflers
I'm trying to decide on a muffler (or mor likely two) for a street driven 74 with a 97 varioram. I want to remove as much weight as possible off the rear. I'll be running headers with no heat (not sure which ones).
I don't mind it being somewhat loud - it will be a weekend cruiser. I do't; though, want to get pulled over all the time. I live in San Francisco where the cops are relatively hands off so I can probably get away with more than others in sleepier areas. Any ideas? Thanks- Craig Backer |

The M&K mufflers are very light and well-constructed. I have one made for 993 headers (2-in, 1-out) and it weighs around 15 lbs. It's a little on the loud side, but I run it on the street without any issues.
P.S. I'm local and the muffler is off the car right now. If you want to check it out in person we could meet up. Last edited by JP911; 04-07-2007 at 10:37 AM.. |

maybe an empty can would be lighter, but the very lightest are Ben's M&K mufflers; the Monty weighs about 1 lb. more
If you were really serious, you'd fab up something out of Titanium, which is what Chevy is doing in the new Corvettes. You could also try the converging/diverging cone types - Phase 9 is one for 911s. Supertrapps on the rear can be used to adjust the loudness. a lot depends on what 'street' means...

I'm local as well. The M&K on my 3.6 Vram is very light, quite loud, sounds good to most ears. I think I'm loosing a little power with it, however. Do you get out to the autocrosses? I'm usually at most of them, and you could listen to a few different options...

I don't know how to describe street any better without using decibel numbers. I guess - slightly obnoxious.
Ben's M&K cans can be seen in a very recent post. The poster says the two cans only weigh about 3 pounds total. I think Coast Fab mufflers weigh about the same as those M&K cans. Not sure how loud they are. I wonder what a set of phase 9's weigh and sound like. Are they close to streetable? Anyone know how much weight supertrapp ends would add to a set up like the M&K's? Thanks all- Craig Backer |

I put a bolt-on supertrapp end on my M&K and it did very little to quiet it down. The reason mine is off the car right now is that I'm sending it back to M&K to have them add 2 more pipes with block off caps to replicate the early rally-style muffler. I plan to run it with the caps on for the street and caps off for track and AX. Perhaps something like this would suit your needs?

I have the last 993 one we are going to make that was used on proto type model we used. Get ahold of me if you are interested as I was going to post it FS in the classifieds. All the 993 ones we have built are louder then any of the other models we make do to how the inlets enter the muffler
The race cans may be very loud for your application. And a side note all of our mufflers are under 15lbs

Ben's R Style muffler is beautiful. I don't have one but may have to add it to my list.

I just installed this one-off Ruf-style M&K on my Carrera this week and it's light as a feather. I've seen many M&K mufflers and the weld and materials quality is second to none. The sound is incredible as well!

One a side note, does anyone know the weight difference between a set of 993 heat exchangers and a set of headers without heat?
