Simple engine drop question....
I'm getting ready to do a drop tomorrow on my '84. This will be my second, and I'm gonna try the motor alone. Since I have the mid-rise left, I think it will be simpler to remate the two pieces when it goes back in. You only live once, right?
At any rate, I think I've got it all ready to come out. I was looking at the checklist for the drop in the tech info center here, which is also for an engine only drop. Two of the steps are: - Disconnect starter wires - Disconnect back-up light If I'm leaving the tranny in, why would I need to unhook these?I'm assuming the trans will droop some when the motor comes out, and I'll support it, but it doesn't seem like it could come close to exceeding the slack in the wires for these connections? Am I off base in this thinking?

I think the yellow wire on the starter runs back through the engine area. I just had to take it off to seperate the engine and tranny. I guess the battery lead could stay on.
I'm not sure about the back-up switch.

you have to disconnect both when doing motor alone.

Figured it out, I was spaced out and looking at the speed sensor, confusing it as the backup. Ready to drop....

sorry I didn't respond, glad you figured it out!
BTW, I've done engine alone before, I think you will find that re-mating the trans and engine is not all that difficult. good luck

I will see how it goes back in. This is the front side of an engine rebuild, so it will be out a while, probably a couple of months. One of the things that also figured into this is not having the transmission underfoot in the garage while I'm working on the engine.
The way I figure it, the worst thing that can happen is I have to pull the trans. Who knows, I met get bored waiting for stuff at the machine shop, and do it anytway. When you think about it, many Porsche shops pull the engines only for clutch jobs, etc, it can't be THAT bad of a task mating the two together with the tranny in the car.

Redundant warning...Be sure the battery is disconnected before
proceeding.

Double warning make sure the throttle linkage is disconnected from the tranny bell crank to the engine bellcrank. It can stay connected with the two attached. If it is like my 85 you have to take tham Dang little clip off the ball socket at the top bell crank.
