Removing and Replacing my Steering Wheel

OK, I feel really stupid about this, but I need some quick help.

I just sold Kermit, a 73 Targa, and am delivering it to the new buyer tomorrow. I have a Prototipo on the car that is not part of the deal, and I need to put the original wheel back on. I have taken the Prototipo off again, along with the spacer, and am ready to put the original wheel back on.

I don't remember the original wheel using a spacer. It just attaches to the steering shaft by just pushing onto the shaft and attaching with the big nut, doesn't it? But when I put the horn pad in place, and rotate it into position, the horn starts beeping.

What am I doing wrong, or is there a problem with the wheel or horn pad?

Do you remember if you modified anything to get the Prototipo on? It seems like there are some horn contacts that have to be switched around to get the prototipo to work.

No modifications. The adapter worked just fine, bolted into place, just like the wheel, and the contact on the horn button just worked the first time.

That's why I'm at a loss. I had no problems going in that direction, I don't know why I'm having problems going back.

Check to see if the rubber bumper inside the hub on the steering wheel is collapsed.

Did you keep the springs that go between the the horn pad and the steering wheel?

That is what the ruber bumper is for in an early car.

BTW, the two washers and the spring. Do they still go on the steering column below the steering wheel? Maybe that is part of my problem, although I don't see how that would impact.

The other issue is the brass pin that is on the steering wheel and acts as an actuator. Should there be anything that I should look at there?

The 914 part is the correct part. It is the thing above item 30 in the picture below.

The flat washer (item #29) goes between the 27 mm nut (item #30) and the steering wheel to hold it on the spline.

The cupped washer (item #6) and spring (item #7) go on the shaft that slips over the splines on the steering column.

The brass pin (item #28) Creates the ground betweeh the rubbing plate and the horn ring when pressed.

Current Status -- I now see that it can't be assembled with the two washers and the spring that are used with the adapter for the prototipo wheel. Secondly, there is no boot on the steering column, much less one that is deformed.

I reassembled the wheel, and it beeped. I pushed around on the horn butterfly and it started becoming intermittent, and finally stopped. It now only beeps when I press on the left side of the butterfly, not on the right.

I don't know what the resolution is. I have some conductive grease that might help, but I don't think that I will find it tonight.

It seems that my problem is resolved for the moment, unless it starts beeping in the middle of my drive. Then, I guess that I'll just have to pull the horn ring in mid traffic and keep on rolling.
