brake/reverse light dont work

From the moment I bought this car the brake/reverse lights did not work. All I have done is check the bulbs to see if they are good, and they are. From anybody's experience where would I start to see where the problem is?? any ideas??

What year is your car? Depending on the year, the brake lights are triggered by two pressure sensors on the master cylinder. Not too sure about the reverse lights. Did you check the fuses?

Garage
Fuses, backup switch on trans and brake light pressure switches. After that get a simple continuity test light and a partner and track down where you loose your electric charge.

Had a similar problem with my 80 SC

Could be the backup light switch located on transmission > gain access via the transmission access hatch on rear floorboard... It's a tight fit..

I think the part/switch was $45 or so...
