915 input shaft seal leak-questions
I rebuilt my trans, and was happy with the improvement, until I found my mystery oil leak was not my flywheel seal, but the input shaft seal(NOT the shift shaft seal). I rotated the shaft and the seal spins with the shaft. I would assume the seal should stay while the shaft turns. I am ordering a new seal, but was wondering what may have caused this so I don't repeat the issue. Also, would it hurt to leave that one in, and put the new one in almost as deep?

That shouldn't happen. How much force did it take to get the seal in during rebuild? Did it go in with finger pressure alone?

The seal should require some force to insert. I would say you need to do some investigation and se if the bore is oversized for the seal.
A sealant MIGHT work, i.e. silicone. |
i just pushed the seal into the trans with VERY light pressure. The trans is coming apart tonight.

If it is any consolation my Volvo camshaft seal is exactly the same. I pushed it in with finger presure, and now I'm praying it doesn't pop out. Of course it is easier to get at.
In the past I have successfuly installed a 0.005" 'shim' with red loctite in a similar situation, but is very difficult to do. Options: 1) dis-assamble and have a machine shop bore the OD oversize and change the seal to a bigger size or press in a sleeve 2) using a center punch around the bore to give the seal some grip and then using a sealant 3) sealant only and instal the secondary seal I would suggest #2. |
I think I may have excessive end play on the mainshaft....

How does that make the seal loose? Did the seal slide forward?
