PPI Rust Inspection, lighting the FE2O3 fuse?

Hi,

After having gotten into more rust than I cared to with my first 911 purchase, I am looking for another - having already secured a 1986.5 928S in the meantime. Also looking for a 944 and a garage with a house attached to it.

I have a concern about PPIs and the "rust inspection" technique often used. Why the icepick/screwdriver? Is there no better way than poking holes in the undercoat and breaking the galvanic "skin" on the steel?

Just seems academic and an innocent question to me, but got a nasty mouthful from a PPIer just for asking!

How many cars were rust free before an invasive icepick PPI which are now starting to rust in a pinprick area?

IR Photography is one of the tools we use in the power industry, might that be a better way?
