Please criticize my A/C design idea

The car: 1984 Porsche 930 (modified) with a 993TT body kit
Location: Las Vegas area
Objective: To have a reliable A/C system for the summer

Compressor: Sanden 507
Hoses: new barrier hoses from RennAire
Rear condenser: Replace with an under-belly condenser plus a fender condenser (not enough space with the big intercooler to install in tail)
Front condenser: Replace with 2 993 condensers with fan or a RennAire ‘Desert-Duty’ front condenser
Receiver/Dryer: ProCooler
Evaporator: RennAire
New blower motors all around
Will use R134

Any idea of an aftermarket ‘clima control’ to replace the 3 positions switch and knob??

Ideas, suggestions always welcome

SCHNELE 04-11-2007 11:16 AM

I am using the Performance Air underbelly condenser and the Griffith's dual Kuehl fenderwell condensers, the 993 condenser is great but you will have to lose you washer fluid bottle to mount it. I am in Michigan and with the weather systems over the lakes I am not giving up anything to do with my visibility. I have a 993 condenser if you need one.

Rain is not much of any issue in this part of the country ...

I know, I bring multiple chapsticks with me whenever i travel to Las Vegas.

Not going to criticize just a few thoughts. I removed the rear engine condensor on my 83SC and replaced with a aftermarket fan assisted condensor in the drivers side rear quarter panel. I also added one of the huge underbelly condensors and I kept the OEM front condensor. I also have the Sanden compressor and I'm useing HC12 refrigerant. System works good but sitting in traffic the underbelly condensor doesn't extract much heat being passive. I like the idea of a 964/993 condensor in the front left fender. Also like the idea of the Rennaire evaporator and the replacement front serpentine condensor. Procooler is the way to go. You should be happy with the results.

I like the idea of using an improved front condenser and fan. Upgrading the evaporator. Adding the 964 condenser/fan to the rear left fender [ I think it should fit]and removing the rear lid condenser. I haven't tried this setup..but I like the idea.

Add a pressure cut-off switch at the output of the compressor to avoid blowing a hose if system pressures rise too high in slow traffic over hot asphalt. Proper charging may be interesting given the required stagnant conditions of the underbelly condenser; the car is still while charging.

Thanks for the ideas for improvement!!

Any ideas for the 'clima control'?

jriera 04-14-2007 05:56 AM

Jim, you don't 'sound' very convinced of my idea ... what would be your recommendation?

Jim Sims 04-14-2007 06:16 AM

Install a condenser with powered air flow (either from engine fan or an electric fan) between the compressor and the underbelly static condenser for slow traffic operation.

jriera 04-14-2007 06:23 AM

Thanks Jim, that was the general idea with the Kuhel/964 condenser in the rear wheel well (plus the 964 condenser and 'desert-duty' condenser in the front). Still recommending the pressure cut-off switch at the compressor output?

Jim Sims 04-14-2007 06:29 AM

Okay, I read your post as putting the fender condenser up front. Yes, the pressure switch is a good idea and "technically" is required by the EPA when doing conversions to 134a. There are receiver/driers that contain a switch port and come with a switch (NAPA sells them) that will work but a switch on the line immediately after the discharge port of the compressor is the best location. I believe switch kits run about $25 plus shipping.

jriera 04-14-2007 06:59 AM

Got it, to make it clear, the idea is to replace the tail condenser with an underbelly plus a Kuhel/964 (fan assisted) condensers and the front condenser with a 'desert-duty' plus a Kuhel/964 (fan assisted) condensers. Procooler, new evaporator, Sanden 507, pressure cut-off switch and barrier hoses, I will put in the Griffith climate control and I will have new motors for all fans. That should keep the car cool!!!

That should give you pretty good results. I replaced everything in my system with the Rennaire system - Sanden 507, barrier hoses, procooler, desert duty front condensor and upgraded evaporator, switched to 134a with good results. Upper 30's at 95 ambient. I kept the original rear decklid condenser so I did not need additional fender or underbelly condensors.

Also if you use reduced diameter barrier hoses you will want to get some of these: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1176569864.gif Since the hoses will be loose in the existing brackets. McMaster Carr has them.

This is timely as my 80 930 A/C is out of the car now and I"m thinking that Carson City NV might get warm this summer.. Any idea on costs?

Jim Sims 04-15-2007 03:09 PM

"Any idea on costs?"

For an 1980 930 that had air: $500 to $3000 depending on what you salvage from the old system, the extent of the refurbishment/upgrade and how much you DIY.

jriera 04-15-2007 04:06 PM

'Collecting' figures for brand new everything, I will report back as soon as I have the details.

9dreizig 04-15-2007 05:52 PM

Thanks Jordi,, I'm going to do my system sometime this summer.. I just jury-rigged it so the A/C blower works without a compressor etc.. that will make it bearable for a while

jriera 04-15-2007 06:01 PM

Unfortunately does not work that way in Las Vegas (tried last year and was unbearable during our long summer).

By the way if you ever make it to Las Vegas I have a 'gift' for you ... something that give me 7 warning in 5 days ... goes between the turbo and the outside world ... and is only for 930's ...
