Autoheat Backdate
Can someone explain what to do and how to control the valves if you have the black plastic box bewteen the seats and you want to backdate?

I have backdated heat in the engine compartment, but still use my auto to control the temp in the cabin.
If you want to convert it over to completely manual you can do one of two things. First is simple, just remove the small screw near the end of the control knob with the red handle on it (Inside the car). THen you can simply raise and lower the lever to control how much heat comes into the cabin manually. The disadvantage to this method is that you can't individually control the amout of heat on the left and right side of the car. The second method is to buy a manual setup with replaces the e-brake assembly and I think you will also have to replace your flpperbox cables so that they can be longer to work individually. Look at a salvage yard for these parts. I recomment simply removing the screw in front or leave it alone if the auto heat control still works.

It's fairly easy to make the change. If you remove the screw from the two piece lever that you have, you can open the flapper valves but the spring loading will return the lever to the closed position, unless you keep your hand on it. A better way is to replace the single lever with a pair of levers from a car with manual heater controls, along with the appropriate shaft, nuts and friction discs. You have to change the one piece cable, from the lever to the flapper valves, to two single cables. It's cheaper to aquire the parts used, so I'd suggest buying a hand brake assembly with all of the heater controls still attached. You should be able to find the whole assembly for $50 to $75. JR |

Can you not just tighten up the nut on the lever to hold the flsappers in place?

Maybe. The levers for auto heat cars have a slightly different arrangment of friction discs. You might be able to add an additional disc, or a spacer in place of the servo lever, and get by. I've never tried it. I prefer to have seperate left/right control.

I've done this with my '80. Basically you remove everything around the red heater control lever. IIRC you'll need to tighten the nut where the servo attached to take up the slack and provide some friction to keep the lever up when you want heat.
I also backdated the trim around the e-brake and heat lever to get rid of the black control box and removed the sensor at the flapper box when I replaced the heat tubes. |
